Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

new SS for old guy

Finally got my SS going! An old 58 cm 1983 Raleigh Technium frame and fork. 27' wheels from a Centurion with nice Suzue hubs. 18 tooth BMX freewheel and a 144 bcd crank with a 42 tooth ring. I used some old Rando drop bars and a new Technomic stem. I have a tan B-17 on it and some BMX style pedals since I roll with Teva sandals or skater shoes. Got a near perfect chainline with the use of a shorter cup and cone Bottom bracket. Surprisingly light at slightly over 20 pounds but havn't attached the rear brake cable yet. I rode it up some sample grades and I climb o.k. with it. I run 90 psi in the 1 1/4" tires and the ride is smooth. Will post some pics later but its definately a hacker not a showpiece. Plan to ride it on my 9 mile daily excercise route and maybe on my 20 mile (one way) commute every now and then.
