Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I can skid now and I'm a little embarrassed. :(

Another fixie newb experience by Tequila Joe.

I finally learned how to skid and was practicing it all the way into the office today.

The last one I did was a little embarrassing. I laid into a nice long skid just as pulled up beside a car at an intersection. I looked into the window as I slid by and I noticed that the driver was a gorgeously cute girl. At that point, I must’ve lost all concentration because I lost my skid, the rear wheel caught and was launched up into the air pulling bike along with me. I unclipped on my way down to avoid going over the bars and biting the pavement. I almost sacked myself during the recovery.

I couldn’t bring myself look into the car to see if she had noticed or had any kind of reaction to my stunt.

Cheers!

T.J.

It's true, chicks in general do not dig bikes so your near wipeout probably did not effect your chances at all. But you will get better. I predict that your next fixie noob experience will be your first trip to the bike store to replace a skidded out tire.

Man, you missed the perfect opportunity. Should have looked over and said "I meant to do that." Perfect ice breaker.

No, not at all Dude. I would have done exactly what you did. In fact, I did worse. I was exhausted after way too much riding and working seven twelves in a row(can't say no to overtime, apparently) and I was coming into the parking lot at work. This red head girl I work with started talking to me and I slowed to talk to her. Apparently, I slowed too much because I fell over onto my side, feet still in my clips. It was funny and ouchie at the same time.

Busted my brand new mirror, too.

That's like the time I was new to fixed gear and trackstanding, and I was standing at a light, looked over at a cute girl, she smiled, I smiled, and realized mid-smile that I was at about a 45 degree angle with the pavement coming up quick.

She walked away and 2 guys on motorcycles in the Eckerd parking lot laughed at me. :'(

i remember when i first learned how to skid, i was riding down a hill and did a skid. however, the place i did the skid was right where the road had a bump (the city of phila/state of pa can't pave for ****). I took a spill and ended up underneath a stopped school bus. that was somewhat awkard

one time back in long beach..me and a couple other guys had just pulled into a parking lot and I was trackstanding. I needed to shake hair outta my eyes, so i did and I was on the ground before I even knew I was falling. Girls were walking by so I just laid there until they left.

thats kinda like a win win situation. if they come over and check if your okay, that rules but if they walk pass and dont see your face it can save your from future embarassment when the girls are with their jock friends when you happen to run into them
