Made a hip pack

I've been wanting a hip-pack/fanny-pack/man-purse so that I can carry around enough tools to fix a flat, without the bulk or heat of a messenger bag. I looked around on the various bag sites, but they all cost around 45 bucks and they didn't look very complicated so I figured I could make one myself. I patterned it off of Zugster Bags' hip-pack which luckily has lots of pictures of it on their flickr account.

Pictures from throughout the process: https://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...or/Hip%20Pack/

I spent about 12 dollars total and I still have enough fabric to do a second bag. It took about 8 hours over the course of two days to complete, but most of that time was spent trying to figure out what to do. The liner was the most difficult part to do. I don't have much experience with sewing and I think I was way out of my depth. I came up with the ulock-holder and the pocket as I was sewing and went with it.

In the end, it wasn't hard to make and I saved 30 bucks. Excellent.

Not trying to hijack your thread but I made myself a hip pack as well. I used some 11 oz cordura that I got from Campmor, some bright ass hi-viz orange nylon from this fabric store in Hackensack and various webbing from Campmor and stuff I had around the house. The velcro came from work but I am never using the adhesive backed stuff again! I've been toying with sewing my own messenger bag for a while and thought I could practice by making a mini version of the bag I was thinking of. I grabbed some template from online and played around with it in Illustrator and sized it accordingly for hip pack purposes. Took me a whole 4 hours or so in total to put it all together, changing and adding things as the bag progressed.

Edit: Here are the pics...

Back with strap

Front pocket

Velcro pocket within flap

I'm already thinking of improvements I want to make to version 2.

Seriously, I actually bought one last week. Along with my Marlboro mondo hip pack (with beer/u-lock holster).

I dig that marlboro pack. Cut it up and make a pattern from it so I can sew one.

yo-- any of you guys interested in sewing up a pack for me? I'd be willing to trade/swap some stuff-- I have some printed t-shirts, screen prints, handmade book, and other things.

i have a wonderful fanny pack from my childhood-- but to my dismay I just looked at the buckle and it has split wide open. it also doesn't have a U-Lock holder...

anyway, message me if you're interested in a goods-swap. the sooner the better, I'm moving in a month!!

Sure, I'll make one and if you like it I can send it to you. Otherwise I'll just use it.

at the moment I am negotiating with Progre-ss.

however if my bartering sounds appealing to you-- well-- if it doesn't work out with progre-ss i would be happy to trade/barter with you.

I really liked Nathanator's design, the Ulock holder + reflector holder + large cargo space are highly desireable to me.

aside from that, colors are not an issue. materials aren't that big of an issue-- it doesn't have to be monsoon proof-- but it should be sturdy. and i might have a spare seat belt belt left over-- so even just having the pack itself will work just fine for me.

Or you could go to work for 2.5 hours and make $30, then ride your bike, drink beer, and listen to some emo for the next 5.5 hours.

Just messin around - I understand the concept of the DIY attitude, it is me in a nutshell. Just don't forget about the value of time.

"IT has been recognized by the surgeons that specialize in hip and tibula breaks that the carrying of U-locks in the rear pocket or on the waist has led many unnecessary injuries to those bones--enough so-- if I recall correctly they issued a warning to that effect--it is besides being a very costly repair on that keeps you off the bike for a long time..please warn people of this fact or look for yourself so you know..BTW I don't know about the official opinion is for chains but I bet they have some issues as well..."
