Whatever. What you folks don't seem to get is that it's not about what you look like or how many languages you can sound stupid in or how many times you've fallen off your bike and landed on your head. It's about minding your own damn business and letting other people mind theirs.

It's easier on a bike with 20" wheels, and I doubt you or any of your friends do it on hills like that or at anything close to those speeds. If you do, I'll give you props. You've got big balls too, make a video and get famous.

Sprockets ("cogs") on coaster brakes are kept in place with a "snap ring" - a springy steel ring that snaps on the hub very tightly, immediately after the sprocket, keeping it on. It's a very reliable locking mechanism, I have no clue how that can fail. Those snap-rings are damn hard to remove or put back on.

The only way it could fail is, if it was rusted like heck.

That's what I thought too, but damned if it didn't come loose and raise hell. Now that I've snapped it back in place, I can't figure out how it came off in the first place. Mystery, is what it is.

Hmmmm... don't ride that thing without a front brake. You might never need it, but since we don't know if that snap-ring has any more surprises in store for you, better be on the safe side.

Oh, and by the way (you're gonna hate me for this): srsly, wear a helmet.

you should get a new snap ring they can get worn out and become easier to put on and pull off with age also clean the socket for the sprocket and the snapring real good before you put it back together and another thing make sure the split it une the lip of the socket and not in one of those little cut outs

good luck stay safe and stop using your head as a crash mat ok

Okay, I'll give props:

This guy is a f****ing idiot. What a waste of time, shoe, and tire. If he gets creamed all he'll get from me is a hearty Nelson Muntz laugh.

The only time I saw a snap ring fail was when a bungee strap got caught in the wheel of a three speed, and it sort of wedged behind the cog, around the cog, and everywehere else relative to the cog, and popped it right off.

For some reason I remember thinking "hey a cotter pin is loose" before I realized what happened. Technically more of a "Who put that there?" moment rather than a part failure.

I recommend installing a nice reliable cable actuated brake for one of the wheels of your bicycle for the future.

I've watched this ****. Going into it, I thought, "Oh man! This guy is so crazy! He must dodge cars and time everything so perfectly and see 4 minutes into the future!!" Turns out he just doesn't have a damn brake. On a Bianchi Pista, which means he had to actually go to an effort to run a freewheel. **** is ********. And if all the stuff he spins sounds like it did in that video, he's a ****ty DJ as far as I'm concerned.

When I hear stories like this, I realize that natural selection is still a powerful force in our society.

I am quite entertained when I hear stories of people running poopy equipment brakeless. Same people who panic when something goes wrong!

I would give condolences but I just don't have alot of sympathy. I have broken a chain twice, and due to practicing stopping with a foot either jammed between the seattube/tire or directly on the top of rear tire, they both ended with no drama. One instance occurred while cresting a large hill under full power at 20+ mph.

Why do people not have brakes? Fashion. In my case, WI winters freeze everything, so they would be useless for me anyways. If you are cool enough to go brakeless, be cool enough to:
1. ride on street, NOT SIDEWALK
2. maintain your equipment
3. NOT PANIC

I was recently rear-ended by a tool who couldn't stop while riding brakeless. Hence, this terse response.

"I think the OP is a ******bag and should just shut up and die, as he's using crap equipment and no brakes."

"I am too cheap to get studded tires when cycling on ice. I don't realize I need a front and a rear brake for such conditions. So I opted not to have any brakes at all. Me am smart."
