DIY bullhorn bars
I've seen people riding with bars that are just steel road drops that have been hacked off and fliped over. How is this done?

This is pretty popular with bike messengers in NYC. Some of them hack off the bars and don't flip them over, since they never ride in the drops, and only on the top part.
Take a saw to them.

I've seen them in the local fix scene. thanks for the info. I'm just getting into the scene and I was just a little unsure about cutting up perfectly good bars before I knew what I was doing.

Usually, old fashioned drop bars with deep drops give you enough grip space after chopping off the drops.

Yeah, I would recommend a pipe-cutter. You'll get a really nice clean cut. I rode a pair of home-made bullhorns for a while but ended up liking drops more. I feel like I get more torque with drops but that's just personal preference. I have a few friends who ride the makeshift bullhorns and really like them though!

As someone posted in an earlier thread, check out:

New, $10 bullhorns.
I have no financial interest in chuck, or his bikes. I plan to DIY my own just because for me, that's what fixin' a fixie is all about.
