Building a fixi/single speed

So I have a 99 Schwinn Peleton that I swapped out components on a newer road frame and I am considering building a fixed gear/single speed with it....I just have some basic questions to get me on the right path as far as components and such....My first question is with gearing...I am trying to find a good combination for a rather hilly place, I live in Colorado Springs....what is the easiest way to find the best gearing combination? Then, I am not sure if i should go with fixed gear or single speed, as I am not sure if I want to be able to coast or not.....I do think I want to go with brakes, should I run one or two? And where is the best place to start purchasing the fixed gear/single speed components I will need? Thanks in advance!!

Does that frame have horizontal dropouts?

Use your road bike to find a gear that works for you. Find a gear and don't shift; adjust as needed until you find the one for you. Figuring out the gear inches or some other measure will help you pick out drivetrain parts. Any BMX freewheel will work just fine for coasting. If you are going to use a freewheel, go with two brakes. Actually, if the frame is made for it go with two anyway. Why not.

Check out Sheldon Brown's page. It has everything you need to know (and order).
