    Traditional Cantalever brakes vs. Vee brakes?

    I have an old touring frame im considering torning into a single speed cross bike and am curiose of the pro's n con's of vee brakes as apossed to traditional cantalevers.

    Traditional V-brakes won't work with standard drop bar levers. Cantis and short pull mini-v's will. This is due to the amount of cable pull need for the brake to work.

    Cantis have more mud clearance and ****tier braking. I think they also look nasty. I'd def. go V if at all possible (lever).

    Get some Pedersen self energisers, you'll love them. I found a front for my fixie. hehe

    Hi,
    a good cantilever brake set up properly can brake hard enough to throw you
    over the bar. V brakes are stronger and less finicky, but I don't see it as a big deal either way.

    If the brakes are good, throw on Kool Stop pads and you're done.

    There are drop bar levers that work with V-brakes. Dia-Compe 287 or something.

    If you have the right levers, there is no reason not to run V brakes, they are easier to adjust and brake better in all conditions.

    V brakes are way easier to set up, but they require specific levers, and put a lot more stress on the seat stay.

    Cantis are a pain in the ass to set up properly, but you can use any old road lever, and they have way more mud clearance than Vs. Once they are set up nicely, they'll stop you just fine.

    V's run parallel to the seat stays so there is a good 3/8" spot for mud to collect between the brake arms and the stays.

    Modern cantis are easy to set up and offer decent stopping power. Avid Shortys and Shimano BR 550´s are excellent brakes. However, if you are not a dedicated euro cross geek, steer well away from Frog Legs, Paul Retros and the like - or as one of my wrech pals so poignantly put it, "**** that ****!"
