custom chainrings?
I know a lot of mfgrs make custom order parts, but does anyone make....made to order chainrings? seems like it would be a good market.
i dont really need one now,but i might in the future. any help would be nice. Thanks |
Hmmm... I think having one cut from straight metal would be prohibitively expensive because of the gears (PITA cutting gears), but I wonder if any solid'ish chainrings could hold up to having shapes milled in 'em.
|
Seems to me all you need is a BCD and a CAD program to make em.... i could be wrong.
if someone knows better please enlighten me. |
Well, that and a shop to do it, depending on the shop. They charge plenty of moneyz for their time, so anything you have 'em do that takes a lot of it also takes a lot of $$, which is why, imo, milling a solid chainring would be a decent compromise. Course, it may be it wouldn't be much more expensive to do it (design and gear) from a blank with a suitable CNC/machine tooling, someone who has had recent work done at an up to date shop should be able to help.

boone! custom ti chainrings - not cheap but gorgeous.
http://www.boonerings.com/cr/cr.html i got one on the front ring of my ss mtb. soon i will have a rear bolt-on cog for my new wheels. |
There was a guy in Japan, but I heard he was closing down. The C&V crowd can tell you about him. He made replacement Rene Hearse chainrings, amongst others, and had about 1 gazillion designs. I don't know if you'd still feel the need for custom, with that many to choose from.

Wow....those Boone rings are pure sexy.

I wanna see better pictures of the boone rings.

custom chainrings you're talkin bout
there is a company coming out called Icecycle Chainrings making customized chainrings and bmx sprokets. Check out www.icecyclechainringshome.com. I havent found them at stores yet but i'm sure they will be soon

I think milling chainrings from scratch would be a real pain, but I'm pretty sure you could find a solid chain ring and either etch things into it, or cut chunks out of it, "mill" it if you will. You could do a pretty dope job with a nice dremmel tool and clean it up with a nice file. I've been thinking of doing something similar to an old cottered crank where the outside chainring and the crank arm are one piece.
