go to your local triathalon and wait for one of the competitors to go inside-foot-down into one of the corners.

it'll be a laugh a minute.

[you can actually lean pretty far before having to worry about pedal strike. but when you're going pretty fast, it's usually fairly low on the list of thought processes compared to say, how much further you can push your tyres.

which is stupid because as long as you're not using budget crap, tyres are capable of incredible things.]

Its really not a big deal. It happens when you make a really sharp turn while your inside crank arm is at the bottom of the stroke.

it can happen in the ways said above, the couple times i or my friends have done it, it has been by taking a corner too close to the curb, so you don't have to be leaning in near as much to clip

You want to know how it happens? Go out, ride really fast around a corner, lean your whip down too far...and I'm sure you'll understand. Stop relying on the internet and allow your own body and bicycle to show you the wonders of catching a pedal on a turn Even better is when you are in tight traffic and catch one on a curb and get tossed into a car.

I practiced pedal striking a few times before my first road race. Like the guy said above, just go to an empty parking lot and hit the turns faster and faster until you strike. Your rear wheel will bounce out about six inches or less. You shouldn't crash.

I had pedal strike pretty bad on a curb yesterday, while going against traffic during rush hour. It was sketchy.

I did it a few nights ago while swerving to go behind a car at about 5mph. I was riding like a jack ass and deserved to crash. I have a very strange looking scratch/bruise on my arm from it. I've done it once or twice at high speed without missing a beat so this low speed crash was kind of unexpected.

Ok...so first of all, no...I don't have a vid clip readily available, sorry. But I'll bet if you find some vids of any local criterium...your BOUND to find someone going down because of this. But you know this is kind of an interesting thread to have started. I used to build bikes for a ton of really tall guys, and unfortunately, you can only raise the BB so far without completely screwing the geometry of the rest of the bike. And now, with the availability of custom made cranks (like up to 220mm) to keep leverage proportions inline with "average" height riders, pedal strike is more of a threat to these very tall, very long legged riders. 170mm length cranks are not just popular in crits because you tend to be able to spin faster, your effectively raising the pedal height, giving maybe a few more degrees of lean angle before the big smack-a-roonie. This is for Stbtra specifically...what "happens" with pedal strike is this...as the rider is going through a corner and leaning sharply, if the rider puts his or her inside foot down, the pedal can hit the ground. As this occurs, the pedal is now the primary traction point and it kicks the rear wheel up and out, problem is that one; the tires do a far better job of adhering to the road and two; the pedal on the ground makes a super-duper pivot point. This is generally a 100% positive way to end up on your arse, well thigh and collar bone really. Ways to reduce the risk of this is to use shorter cranks arms, which isn't always a good option, stay away from big, "blocky" pedals, and finally....keep your inside leg UP in the turns. Lol...and just to bring back some "good" memories for some of us...remember the old Time road pedals!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had one pedal strike on my Ciocc conversion. I was pulling a tight u-turn and right at the apex, bang. The rear wheel came up, smacked down, and I did a sort of drift. What I didn't realize was that the tire had come unseated just a little bit and about 1000 feet later, BANG, tube exploded.

I have had pedal strike several times-- both from sprinting out of corners a little early in crits, and from riding fixed. I have never gone down from it... although i have seen it happen. I think it is a more common problem with conversions than track bikes.

I once had a rat bike where one of the foot pegs was welded in place (no breakaway hinge). It made for some interesting times in tight corners.

I've never gone down from a pedal strike but I lost my chain once and (actually that same time) the pedal hit so hard it cocked the pedal and stripped the threads out on the crankset (that sucked).

My conversion from a mid 70's raleigh supercourse has a suuuuper low bb and ever since I have been riding fixed (it was a ss until 3 weeks ago) I've been really panicy about striking a pedal. I guess I just need more practice, right now I'm just taking curves really slow.
