Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Any advice on caring for your "vanity saddle"?

As i was taking pictures for this post, i realized that there's some cracking going on at the back of my saddle.
Now granted-- i know a saddle's not going to be in great condition forever, but seeing as the below saddle is on my "weather beater" (a fixed gear i built up for riding in wack weather, ie rain, day after rain, snowy conditions, etc), a bike i won't be riding all that often, i was hoping i could keep the saddle in better condition than normally expected. It's also kinda interesting looking, and is really the only fun/atypical aspect of the bike (nishiki road conversion with sawed off risers, run of the mill nitto stem, bobo hubs on sun m13II, etc), so i was hoping to keep it looking crispy for as long as possible.
Does anyone have any advice for keeping something like this in as good condition as possible? My girlfriend (the artist) recommends leather varnish, which i may explore-- but i figured i'd ask other riders first.
Here's the damage... pretty minor, as you can see:

But in my head, all i see is the Grand Canyon.

The rest of the saddle is pretty good so far:

Help!

Good call-- any ideas on preventing others?
Has anyone used "leather varnish"?
