Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Places to eat and bike shops in Berkeley - SF

Next weekend, my wife and I are going to a concert at the Greek theatre. We're coming in on BART and plan to go to SF during the day. Normally, we hike down to the Buena Vista for an Irish Coffee but I was wondering if we are missing any good places to eat either in the Embarcadero area or around the Berkeley campus.

We will be bikeless and carless, so the places will need to be walking distance from BART. Also, is it much of a hike from the BART station to UC? I haven't spent much time around that area since around 1985 save for last summer when I sped through the UC campus during the Oakland Scrape.

Also, are there any good bike shops along the route? My wife generally doesn't mind going into bike shops if they are not out of the way.

Montano Velo on Piedmont in Oakland is a must if you are really into fixed gears.

As far as shops, Mikes Bikes and The Missing Link (among a handful of others in the surrounding region) are both at the base of campus near University and Shattuck.

I'm transferring to UC Berkeley next semester and will be there nearly everyday so I'm in the same boat as far as finding places to eat.

Is there a type of cuisine you and your wife like? Also do you have a price range in mind? I'd second Jitensha Studios for interesting bikes in the UCB area. Missing Link and Mike's are both fine shops, but probably not much different than your own LBS as far as stock.

I 2nd Caloso's Top Dog pick. Also Zachary's on Piedmount(?) was voted best deep dish pizza in the US.

If you can get to VeloSport on Grand(?) Ave. It is/was cycling nirvana. I made many a pilgrammage there back in the early 70's
Go Bears!

Cole Coffee & Zacharys on College

Close to the Rockridge BART you'll find two MUST stops in Berkeley/Oakland:

-Zachary's Pizza
-Cole Coffee

Just stopped into Jitensha Studio yesterday and they were welding a frame. BEAUTIFUL shop and nice parts to check out.
