Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Gitane commuter

To buy or not?
First of all... it is my size... 50cm, 30in standover... having troubles finding that.

Gitane Gran Sport Deluxe converted to single speed with respaced and redished rear wheel.
"NEW HP TIRES, NEW SEAT,POST,AND BAR WRAP. NEW CHAIN AND FREEWHEEL.
FRESH GREASE,BEARINGS,CABLES AND HOUSING."

Asking $150.. would be local pickup, so no shipping charges, no assembly required.

Also, my new fixed track wheels that I just ordered will fit it. I was gonna have to rig up, stretch, and cross my fingers to make them fit the other bike I was shooting to put them on.

Is $150 too much for an old converted bike to use as a nice looking commuter, play bike?

It's local, I agree with TEDC...go for a spin! Be sure to ride up and down at least one good hill, too.

Check out what on the bottom bracket?
It's french threaded... so BB issues are a concern.

Are cottered cranks a problem? Cause problems?

No, they're just outdated. Perhaps a little heavy, but nothing really noticeable.
They can be a pain to work with, though, if they're really stuck on there.

I imagine that the "check the BB" sentiment comes from the assumption that it might be old & worn (an assumption based on its age, since nobody uses cottered cranks anymore). it out, briefly, to be sure that it's smooooooV like butta.

Go look at it, ride it for a sec if he'll let you, and get it if you like it.

I found one of these Gitanes in the trash and gave it to one of the wrenches at the LBS to convert as it would've been too expensive for me to do it.

What's the value of the parts he put into it? The condition of the frame? It's mild steel, heavy and dead feeling.
