what to mask for powdercoating
searched both here and google, and found a lot of vague answers. looking for a definate answer.
i found a guy who powdercoats in my area, and will blast and do my frame and fork for $40. i just wanted to make sure i had all mask/plug areas right to tell him to look out for:
-head tube
-seat tube
-bottom bracket
-fork stem (do you need to mask just the threads or the whole thing...???)
what about the dropouts? will the finish be thick enough to cause problems?
lastly, will reinstalling the headset cups be any area of concern with powdercoating?
thanks

you covered it.
if he's a professional, the coating shouldn't be too thick, and the dropouts shouldn't be an issue.
if you wanted to be super safe, you can mask the inside of the dropouts.

I just had mine done. He used these little cork things to cover the threads. regarding the head tube and BB shell, you will probably need them faced; the threads will be ok. so will the dropouts-it's not really thicker than paint.
I had my whole steerer tube masked-the fork crown cup or whatever it's called is a tight fit.

Don't worry about the dropouts.

Don't forget about fender eyelets if you have em. I was able to clean mine no prob after powdercoating, but i have a tap and die set, maybe you don't. pc on the dropouts will do no harm.

After having several frames blasted and coated by them I'm happy. All I did was chase the BB threads and face the headset/BB and I'm golden. They masked the steerer tube perfectly but the tape residue was a pain to get off, I ended up having to use naptha to remove it.

Just make sure whatever you use to mask is not gonna become a gooey mess after the job is done. The coater will use a heat-proof tape.
