%$%$ OuRys with a new tWisT...Yeaaaa Boyeee
My girlfriend switched to risers, and for a while we just stuck on some generic thin MTB grips. She wanted something a little more cushy, and a little trimming of the bars, so I decided to surprise her up with some pastel ourys. I always like the lock on type for my MTB, but they were too long for her cut-down bars. I also hated how normal ourys get all mangled at the ends of the flares. So, I hooked her up with some BMW Bar Ends.
Shown here:
First, I chopped off the last square "chunk" of the Ourys up to the next one:
Then I slid a wet plastic knife underneath the old grips to help remove them:
Time to chop. I used a pipe cutter from autozone. The trick is to tighten up the blade, spin the assembly 10x, tighten the blade, spin 10x, tighten the blade, and so on. Eventually the groove will move far enough through the bar until the end spits off:
I almost had a hernia trying to twist/force the new Ourys on, but they eventually got there without the help of any lube/hairspray/glue. The benefit is that they're on solid and immediately ready to ride. I left a litte on the end for the bar ends:
Had the girlfriend install the barends and give final approval:
As I had hoped the outer "chunk" of the grip matches up nicely with the radius of the bar end. I think it looks pretty good, and will probably stay that way much longer than the normal oury rubber flange.

Before:
After:
Overall we chopped 1.5 inches and the Ourys are much more comfortable for my girlfriend than the thin grips she was using before. She's gonna commute 20 miles tomorrow and give me some feedback at the end of the day.

Rant:
What is it with girls and...**********?
Always with the risers, the mixtes, the half-clips, the broad-ass saddles...
...what I'm getting at: why do girls so often end up on silly-looking bikes?

Weird. It seems like we both thought of this idea at the same time. I just put a pair of cut Ourys on my risers and attached a set of CamAcura bar ends. As I was doing this, I was honestly wondering why no one else had done it yet...

Typically, when I say "my commute is 12 miles" that means one way. Why put 8 hours of sitting on your ass in between? Why not include the time you sleep so you can just add up the entire week? Then you could say her commute is 100 miles. That would be so badass. Especially in 45 minutes.

Looks a lot cleaner than the hackjob I did on my risers. But then again, you actually know what you're doing so congrats on having a cool gf!
