Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Keep writing, keep it interesting and dont rely on the fact that you bought a Penny Farthing...cause anyone can do that.
I disagree. You know how kids take fortune cookies, and add "in bed" to the end of it and then all of a sudden all the stupid fortunes are now hilarious and it never ever gets old?

He could write the most boring blog possible and just add "on my pennyfarthing" to the end and I'd just read forever. Really.

Suck on that, pessimism.

I met a lady who rode a penny farthing on a 6-day bike tour which was about 50miles a day. There were a fair few hills too. that > pub

I can't really be bothered with this forum stuff this anymore, if you guys want to knock each others interests that's fine, but it's not for me.
The trouble, mate, is that this particular sub-forum is populated primarily by sixteen year-olds. Fixed gear is the latest thing, you know.

These kids can be fun, but I think you'd have gotten better results on the vintage forum.

Not me. I'm Canadian and I smell funny because Canada provides 20% of the US oil supply. But it's better than being from BC, eight feet tall, and covered with hair.

You're supposed to expect it when you least expect it so I suspect it wouldn't simply be "rode big wheel to pub, wobbly ride back, weather continues fine". Seems kind of silly to do a pre-emptive dis on what makes up most peoples blogs already. on a penny farthing.

Even to the pub.

Am I the only one that posts on the internet, and remembers that I'm talking to actual people?
It's the nature of the kids around here.

I think it is kinda cool. In fact, lets turn it into the next fad! JK. I enjoyed reading some of your stuff. Just, if you really want to make it a Penny Farthing blog you gotta focus solely on the bike with perhaps some personal stories. The bike needs the history of it told and the reasoning behind the wheel design. Set up a club. Try to get a couple of other penny farthing riders. How crazy would it be if you were out for a ride when you pass a gang of penny farthings? Make it your life. More pictures of the bike (detail). Why not start building a modern one (carbon fiber tubing, deep-v rims, riser bars, etc.)?

Sorry, that is a jumble of stuff, but I thought that constructive criticism and a little praise would be a nice change to some of the "Negative Nancys" that seem to linger on this forum.

Why does it seem as if a lot of fixed riders are such "tortured souls" that can only speak in sarcasm and insults? Seriously, quit listening to Bright Eyes in the bathtub with one candle lit and get your ass out and ride. It will brighten your day. Unless of course you pass someone whose chain is a little slack and instead of trying to give them a little advice/help you rush back to your computer in order to start another thread about how much you hate hipsters.

Quit b****ing. Go ride.

Sorry, got a little off topic there, but so did everyone else.

They were made before chains and gears were good enough to use for bikes. Early safety bike chains were terrible. And safeties are for girls, BTW. Real men ride ordinaries.
