Why do Oury grips rock so hard?

Is it me or are they enjoying a secondary renaissance of sorts among the riser-lovers, etc? And for good reason, as I feel they are most excellent grips. But why do they rock so hard? Both my bikes have them (as well as my girlfriend's) and I haven't even considered anything else for 2+ years. They're comfy, feel secure enough, etc. They've got something that other grips don't.

But what is it?

I'm part of the minority that doesn't really dig em. I prefer the feel of a close grip on the bars, so Oury's are just too chunky for my liking. Thinner grips seem a lot more resistant to slipping around as well. Oury's can look really nice on the right build though, for sure.

Because they're fly?

I don't know, I like Champs or Soyos on bullhorns or 'proper' builds on track bars. But there's something hot about Ourys on risers, or sliced and jammed up next to the stem on a drop bar.

Also, they come in enough colours to satisfy most fashion builds.

I think its cause they were hot on Mnt bikes during the cottage craze of anodized billet parts in the 80s/90s.....but that fell off. Now there is a surplus of Ourys. Not saying they are bad grips.....but now there is a surplus.

I have monster hands, so they are they thickest grip I could find without looking very hard. They are very comfortable as well, always grippy and if they get dirty and you ride hard with gloves, they clean themselves (as I just discovered).

I'll never go back. Love my Ourys. And the best part, the longer you have them, the softer they get.

That's the funniest answer I've seen. Contrary to what you think, Ourys have enjoyed steady love from the MTB crowd. Just because the new wave of street fixed riders discovered risers and Ourys doesn't mean either one was resurrected or had a surplus sitting in some warehouse waiting to be dumped.

What's the easiest way to clean them? My grips get crazy dirty and I have to wash my hands everytime i get off the bike.

Soapy water and a sponge. Just use dish soap. Works great.

ride em with gloves on. If you twist your hands around them, the dirt just balls up and falls off. This was just a mid ride coincidence when my black looking red ourys came out bright red after 1/2 hour of riding. Or just use soap and water...

Yes, I'm not an Oury lover (first time I've disagreed with FD? I'm shocked). I only ride them on a bike where I sweat a lot (geared mountain bike ridden basically only in the summer) and I find that they absorb a ton of moisture and come unstuck unless you glue them down, which naturally you don't want to do. Totally unrideable without gloves if you're sweating - they get slick as soon as you start sweating.

I think I only got them dreaming that they'd be as sticky as the bmx grips I remember as a kid, with fine radial ridges that had mushrooms on the ends - they got torn up really fast and were way too expensive, but your hands stuck to them, and heh, they had a silly mushroom on the end.

Those considering a first pair of Ourys, seriously consider any dual density grip of the same price range instead - squishy and sticky when you're just tooling around, smaller and denser for when you're really pulling back on the bars and hammering. Plus they'll be a tube with plugs, so you can stick them wherever you want e.g. behind bar ends.

If I was setting up a new pair of flat bars, I'd wrap them with cork tape, which I think feels great, is the most functional, has a little padding but doesn't move, and feels great on bare hands - I'd ride my road bike without gloves if I had no fear of shredding my hands.

haha! my old man raced motocross with bob oury in colorado in the 70's. Im now running ourys on my giant bowery ss, diamondback bmx, old balance mtb, KTM mxc300, and my girlfreinds cruiser schwinn. I love the cheesy website ourygrips.com . for those that say they like the "closer to the bar feel" I too like that on my moto and i LOVE the "classic" and "pryamid" styles. AND! always put em on with a bar you clean first with soap, dry, and blow them on with compressed air.
