Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Gios Project I am ready to ride this byotch!.

So here's the GIOS frame that just came in

And today I got the saddle. I decided I wanted this to look cool, even though my boyz were hoping I'd get a Brooks Saddle
(I love the packaging!)

pretty!

Matching bar tape?? BONUS! (although the Gios won't be taped, so this will go on my cross bike instead)

I'm assuming yr pics are enhanced; do the blues really match perfectly? If so, i'd love to see it mounted. What else are you going with?

I was worried because online the saddle didn't look like a perfect match. The blues are almost identical. I didn't do anythng to the photos to make them match.

Here's what I have planned:

Mavic Ellipse wheelset
Campy Record Pista Crankset / BB
Thompson Seatpost
FIXIE INC (Germany) (www.cycles-for-heroes.com) straight bars and carscratchers. (oh, the "English" version doesn't work - click on Deutch)
Cinelli Stem
...?

More photos coming next week. I'm off to Chicago - any Chicagoans here have any fun cool stuff - ideas for my vacation - it's my girlfriends bday and I'm surprising her.

Car-scratchers look punk as ****, but I can't get behind the intended use. Property destruction just doesn't sit well with me.

I have no plans on riding around, scratching cars. But they look tight on those bars and hey, if I did happen to get swiped by a car, I would probably have a tiny bit of satisfaction knowing the scratchers scratched.

I know let's take an important safety feature on a bike and redesign it to be almost as dangerous as nothing but look kinda cool. Pure genius.

hahaha (oh god). Ya I can't even count how many times I have been injured by my bar ends. I guess we're not allowed to have a little fun while building up a fixie. OK OK I will send them back. GAHHHH!

Yeah it's not incredibly common but it happens and then instead of a bruise or cracked rip you'll have a big ****ing hole. It just seems like a really ****ing stupid thing to do to make you bike look a little different.

Yeah, well... some people ride without a "just in case" front brake, so I am still safer than many.

I have a nice crescent shaped hole in my thigh from where my bars wore through my grip on my polo bike.

I'm guessing that's probably not a polo bike, though.

One day I was bored. I was on www.gios.it and I sent an email using their "contact" form asking if they happened to have any old Gios Pista frames laying around.

This guy named Alfredo Gios from Turin, Italy emailed be back with a photo of one he had from the 80's. It happened to be just my size. So I wired him some $$ and soon I had it in my hands. Nice when things work smooth like that, eh?

I'm glad we're talking about the bike again! Thanks!

Yeah what gives! I'm all psyched about my new setup and someone has to come rain on my parade! Some people are just cocked and loaded.

That's forums in it's best form I guess.

Oh well, he made a decent point about safety that I never really thought much about - abrasive, but educational. I still don't think it's THAT big a deal.

$450 Euros. Paid over $700 in American Dollars with shipping. I didn't care though, I fell in love with a Gios I saw parked in Philly while I was out there a few weeks ago. I was also psyched that Alfredo was dealing with me himself. Also being Italian myself, etc... it just seemed perfect.
