Pista Crankset Craze
 

What's up everyone? So I just picked up a 2006 or 2007 Pista on CL, original plan to put everything from my Garlatti coverted frame onto that. After I got it home, I found it had a Sugino RD crankset on it. The Garlatti has an old Nervar Star crankset with a Campagnolo BB. Now I'm up in the air on how to run it:

Switch the BB over but keep the Sugino cranks.
Switch the whole deal, BB and Nervar.
Just switch cranksets, not BB's.
Leave the BB/Sugino set up.

It's a weird vs. so any thoughts are welcome, I keep going downstairs to stare at it and I got nothin.'

in all likelihood, the campy BB and the sugino cranks have different tapers (eyetalian standard vs. japanese standard), and you probably dont' want to mix and match them.

if you're gonna switch, switch both the cranks and the bb. but why bother?

'Eyetalian'...you just gave me a flashback to my grandpa.

Anyway, yeah, I guess switching the whole thing was a thought if the campy BB was wayyyyy better than whatever is on there, but it probably doesn't matter and/or I wouldn't even know the diff. Not bothering could be a good idear.

Sugino RD's have the taper from hell, it's something not quite JIS...

So scratch the idea of using your Campy BB with the Sugino's. The spindle length is probably way too long anyway. Regardless, there's really nothing wrong with RD's.

On the Sugino site, it says the RD/RD2 JIS but that's probably their own version of JIS :D

Stick with the RD's, they're great cranks despite a lot of people on here who don't know any better talking smack about them. If the RD's came stock, the bike is an '05, though who knows, they may have overstocked the cranks and put some on later bikes. If you have the tools, I'd love to know what bottom bracket was actually in those bikes. Also, is the chainring in the inner or outer position on the cranks, and what are the stamped markings on the back of the cranks?

The nervar are kind of a collector thing, and the ones you have probably have an odd size 128mm BCD spider, meaning that replacement chainrings would be very hard to come by. I would just keep the RD's and sell the nervar.

edit: also, the pedal threads on the nervar may be french, don't try to put regular pedals in there. They'll go in, but it will be tough, and it will trash the threads.

Sweet, thanks for the info. Cranks are stamped D-5 FORGED 170 BX and chainring is on the outer.

yeah, the nervars are going to stay on the old set up now, and i believe you are right on the pedals, it's righty to back them out.

Hmm, interesting, that's totally different stamping than the current RD2's. ****, I wish Sugino had USA reps we could harass about this stuff.

French threads aren't a different direction, they're still R hand on the drive side and L hand on the other, they're just smaller. You can tap them out to standard english if you really want, but I wouldn't do this to those.

yeah, I'm guessing it's from 05. Who knows?

Everything worked out, kept the RD's, put my MKS pedals on. (You're right, threads are the same directions, I had just read that Nervars may have had a smaller diameter but it was fine,) Everything is working great so far. Thanks for the info.
