I'd think this would be one of those personal preference/ individual anatomy/ bike setup dealies. You'll probably have to just try both and see for yourself.

Gel is too bulky and can actually cause chafing. It also weighs about 10 lbs.

Gel feels queer and it'll give you saddle sores more easily.
Pig leather on Exte Ondo Golden chamois=best thing you can possibly sit on.

just don't do the n00b thing and wear tightie-whities under your bike shorts... yowzas. the guys saying "commando" are giving good advice. Chamoi butter works well and, if you into it, it even comes mentholated.
The gel padding can give the sensation of wearing a diaper. A lightly padded short/bibs and a good/well-setup seat is all you need for a long ride.
speaking of commando, i was on a ride a few weeks ago and in an effort to be a little friendlier (i'm the @$$ who tends to pass people w/o saying a word...) I chatted up some guy. Long story short, I became his new-best-cycling buddy. I had to ride out 50+ miles before I could get him off my wheel. I didn't have the heart to tell him his 20 year old cycling shorts were totally thread bare... He didn't understand why I wouldn't let him pull and I didn't have the heart to tell him... I need to work on my people skillz.

That's perty funny. Yeah, I know the purpose of the chamois is to have protection from seams, second to that would be actual padding so I wouldn't be wearin' no draws. I actually didn't take the ride, so I never spent the money on shorts. I'm so poor. On the bright side, I did meet the hottest chick in the world over the weekend.
