What's so stupid about a SS conversion?

I have seen people on this forum say that you should only ride geared or fixed and that SS freewheel is stupid. Whats with that opinion?

I'm currently commuting on a Surly Cross-check and I never shift gears because it's in an urban environment that's pretty flat. I'm thinking about stripping it down to SS, REGARDLESS OF OTHERS OPINIONS. But I'm just wondering, what's with the attitude? My guess is that it's just the typical egocentric cyclist view that my way is the only way.

go for it! convert your bike to a SS and ENJOY IT. Ignore the bleated whining of the uber elite, holier than thou, better than you, stuck up snotty snobs that are so prevalent in the "scene".

ride your new SS and ENJOY IT. i know i enjoy mine.

Really? I seem to think that most people who post here and know bikes think most bikes have a purpose and you should choose the right bike for the right purpose.

Oh and it seems to me that you have the same attitute that you are complaining about by saying "REGARDLESS OF OTHERS OPINIONS"

if you're riding in an environment where ss will work, go for it!
for me, ss freewheel isn't practical (or fun).

I was just trying to say that I'm not letting the opinions of others influence my decision. It's just curiosity. I don't follow advice on how to be cool. I stopped subscribing to Mountain Bike magazine when they started telling me how I should dress and spec my bike to fit in.

I'm not sure why I'm wasting my time on you actually...

My guess is that the dish on the back wheel is more pronounced once you remove the cassette...and some people might find a dished back wheel with only one cog as "stupid".

Who is arguing? I didn't take it that way. I thought we were having a conversation on a message board. Arguments usually have punctuation such as !!!! or **** If you don't like my opinion, don't reply, block me or go live in a vacuum where everyone can be just like you. You are on a forum where you ask a question about an opinion. I gave you my view. I also gave you my opinion about that same attitude I felt you were complaining about as well as displaying.

Nothing wrong with SS. If you're making an inexpensive bike to commute and ride around the city with, SS is hands down the cheapest way to go. With fixed you have to buy a new wheelset for your conversion.

i like SS more. after realizing how unfun it is to spin down a hill at 180rpm, i came to realize how great coasting is.

So you ride a geared bike?
what possible enviornment could you be riding in where ss is less practical then fixed?

Handling on a SS is a bit nicer since you don't have to worry about pedal strike.

I used to have a problem with SS. I understood that it might appeal to some people, but in my head i thought, if you're gonna coast you might as well have gears.

however, I've changed my tune a bit. I'm currently finishing a SS Cross-Check (like yours!). I figured hell, I might want to coast sometimes! and I'll want to take it off-road occasionally. I didn't want to mess around with gears, but wanted something versatile.
so, I say, SS X-Check FTW!
