Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

But this has been keeping me up at night.

Why is it called a seatpost when what it holds is called a saddle and not a seat?

Because, in bicycle vernacular, "saddle" and "seat" are synonyms.

It matters to us because we're bike nerds, but the rest of the world scratches their heads when we call our seats "saddles."

What does this topic specifically have to do with singlespeed or fixed-gear bicycles?

well it is part of a bicycle so it is on topic. Can't there be any creativity to this forum in regards to biking? I mean can't we converse about bikes without having to be so rigid and orthodox?

Yeah and the "saddle post" clamps into the "saddle tube" near the junction of the "saddle stays" for some reason, no one ever seems to call any of those parts by their proper names...

Why do they call it "landing gear" when much harder to take off without it than to land without it.
