Recommendation to Broke BFers in College Towns
Convert ****ty old 10 speeds into slightly less ****ty single speeds and sell them to impressionable college kids!
10 speed from garage sale - $20-$30
SS Freewheel - $20 at most
Your time spent in conversion - worthless
Sell on CL for $150
$100 profit in 24 hours
I just made the easiest benjamin of my life converting an old road bike, so I thought I'd give a heads-up to the less insightful and entrepreneurial members of BF.
To the disinterested members, my apologies for another worthless thread. But hey, isn't this better than a PhotoShop contest?

I've noticed where the SS/FG rage has driven the price of old road bikes way up. IF you can find a $20 conversion bike, it'll be a heavy old Schwinn. Used to be able to pick them up for $5-$10 at yard sales. I have a couple Schwinn tanks in my garage right now, not to mention a vintage Trek that would make a good fixie. Hmm, I might be sitting on a gold mine! Keep it up, folks!

I've been doing this **** for years. You can sell any old road bike converted to fixed or single speed for $150, easy. I found four old Schwinns for $3 each over the weekend.. I'm going to be rich.

I already have 2 bikes on the go. Both fbikes I got for free, people actually leave old road bikes behind the bike store I work at. Maybe gonna put $10 into each of them and sell them for $125 each at the end of the month.

I'll one up you. Go to your local thrift store. No, not inside, behind the store. Now find the dumpster. Good. See all those 10 speeds? Grab as many as you can fit in your apartment. Take off the steel wheels and/or damaged aluminum wheels and throw them back in the dumpster. Now you've got them home, swap parts around till you have one or two complete bikes. This should take you about an hour. Take the left over frames and strip them of everything but cranks, bars, stem and seat post. Now, list the complete bikes for $150 and the stripped frames for $75 to $100. Make sure to put "Lugged Steel, Perfect for FIXIE. ZOMG!!!!!11!! "
You just made $500 bucks.

I spent a whole day in Forth Worth going to thrift shops, Goodwill, flea markets, etc. Found plenty of live chickens, car wheels, crap stereo equipment and tools but not one decent or even slightly decent bike or frame for renovation. One lonely Schwinn Step-through singlespeed with stamped dropouts and rust everywhere. The Goodwill wanted $50 for it. Found a wrench who said he went garage sailing every Saturday and felt lucky to get one frame a month.
Meanwhile, all anyone on eBay has to do is say the words Paramount, Bridgestone or NJS and they can sell whatever Hi-ten crap they've got for big bucks. And to think I gave away that 70's Gitane bike for nothing but karma.
