I'm sorry, the last thing I want to do is turn this into a flame war, but what do you expect? Were they supposed to ask you to write the story? They have talented staff writers who, though they may wish, cannot travel back in time to meet the deceased subjects they are to cover.

i emailed the supervisor for the news department, Karen Parsons:

Ms Parsons -

i am greatly offended and saddened by the tone of Craig Lester's article about the cyclist killed.
etc, etc, etc...

she was apparently out of the office until last week. here was her response:

Dear Joshua,
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
First of all, I'd like to extend my condolences for the loss of this young man. He must have been really special, a number of his friends and family have written to me to comment on how his accident was presented.
I have been working with all our broadcasters to keep in mind that although many people are affected when a crash happens, that when there are injuries and death, it is essential for us to be compassionate in our reporting.
Although it may be hard to believe as a result of your experience, Craig Lester is a kind and considerate person. I think he lost sight for a time of the impact this kind of accident has. I've spoken with him, and other staffers about how to write about deaths in the future.
Again, I'm sorry about the loss of your friend. I had a dear friend die at the hands of a drunk driver when I was 21. They never leave your thoughts.
Karen

I completely second these thoughts. I didn't know Shiznaz by his first name, only his bikeforums moniker, and was very fond of him. I am saddened to learn I will never be able to chat with him again.

Maybe to some he was "controversial", but I found him to be among the most corteous and friendly bikeforum members. And a truly creative and precious person.

Shiznaz, God bless your good soul. Rest in peace.

Someone requested a link to the post in my blog. Here it is again.

After a long arduous trip across the Western U.S. and most the way through Canada our pal Charlie was run down by a selfish and unconcerned drunk driver in Manitoba. He will be terribly missed by those who knew him and a loss for those who didn't get the chance to get to know him. His family is no doubt devastated by their loss. To anyone who cares to send some messages of condolence you may do so in the comments section of Charlies travel blog at http://thedoublecross.blogspot.com/

Thread stuck until Sunday, August 19th so people who knew of him on here are aware of his passing - pitboss

i don't know what to say, that's shocking and sad....

They were for his memorial ride.

workingbike 09-14-07 11:11 PM

Ahh, Jeez.

I got directed here by one of the mods after I replied to one of his earlier posts. Thanks ( I think ) Donna.

I didn't know him and had only noted in passing some of his comments. Reading some of the comments here i think I will have to go back and look up some of his threads.

Ride On.

I just read this thread. I'll miss his posts, and I am sorry I never met him in person. My prayers go out to his family.

A small memorial has been put up near where Charlie was killed:

It is a good deed you've done. You have my respects.

See you when I get "there" buddy...I will miss you, but never forget you.

Thank you

Hearing this news is a really sad circumstance under which to return to bikeforums after a few months absence.

Much belated condolences to all his friends and family. I really enjoyed his presence here; he will be sorely missed.

RIP.

colnago57 10-09-07 10:10 AM

Definitely not the best thing to see after being absent from the forum for a while. Since I got back from a land with no internet access I've tried to think of something appropriate to say and all I can think of is how much this sucks. This first time I ever saw Shiz's avatar I nearly shot coffee out of my nose. He'll be missed.

DerekRI 10-11-07 12:29 PM

I'm sorry to hear this...

WoodsterSS 10-30-07 10:52 PM

I've read many of his posts and I really enjoyed his personality. What a terrible loss.
