    What happened at CMWC?

I heard that the first and second place men were disqualified. What happened? I searched around for the answer last night to no avail.

Rumor and hearsay have it that first place backtracked to get to a checkpoint he missed (which is against the rules) and that second/third place were both harrassing checkpoint workers.

    This is entirely unsubstantiated however.

No offense, but why does a person give a **** about the standings in an alleycat that they're not actually participating in?

Are there manifests? Are you going from checkpoint to checkpoint on a bicycle? Sounds like an alleycat to me.

if the worlds is anything like the north american ones, no, its not like an alleycat, its a little more like a crit on a closed course with checkpoints.

i don't want to sound like a jerk, but i don't see the merit in this question. replace the word "alleycat" (which this definitely wasn't) with any other sporting event and the question is pretty irrelevant. same reason people care about the tour de france, baseball, basketball, football, etc...

besides, there's enough of us here that had friends that were racing, and for a while there were a LOT of us who didn't know what was going on with the standings because ...well, international phone calls are expensive and most people that raced weren't online in their spare time. so getting the standings wasn't easy over here.

furthermore, there was a bit of confusion over who actually DID take top standings for male and female, but what yoshi said sums it up pretty well.

i dunno, i think its a pretty major cycling event and i think the original question is totally justified for these forums.

No offense, but why do you give a **** if another person gives a **** about the standings of ANY race, be it alleycat, TdF, or a couple of buddies sprinting up his street?

An Alleycat is live traffic. A messenger championships, as defined by the International Federation of Bicycle Messengers and Associations, takes place on a closed, traffic-free course. That way no-one has home-town knowledge. And if you don't give a **** about it, why the **** are you reading and replying to a thread on the subject?

For those of you that are interested, I thought that Austin and Jumbo were rightfully dqed. I was a little disappointed by Gar's dq, but under the circumstances I can see the logic.

And Peter is a cool guy, did the pre-event and the ride from LDN to DUB. So right result in the end. Needless to say, the controversy rages.

The results are in - the race winner did NOT test positive, and was therefore disqualified.

My mistake. I forgot that having interest in something is uncool. How embarrassing.

I was surprised, it's not often you hear about people getting disqualified from messenger races or alley cats.

really it seems that every other event down here ends with some sort of arbitrary decision, penalty or mistake determining the top standings.

FWIW, I think everyone would find the final times for the DQed racers quite interesting.

True, but times are only a part of it in most CMWC/NACCC/ECMC formats, you can get a very good time by screwing up, cross the line first and lose to a better or, truly to fear, a perfect meanifest, or set of manifests as there are usually multiple manifests.

Likewise you can rock up in standings even if you finish last, I went from 17th to 4th in a semifinal and qualified for the final at a NACCC with a perfect manifest. Then I lost drastically, I've got a bad habit of hanging around checkpoints talking to girls...errr, I used to have that habit I mean

That's what the after party(ies) are for!!

Also, I wonder why there were only three manifests. At NACCC the past two years, there were 5 to be completed in 3 hours. Hell, I completed three during the finals in Philly and I'm hella slow..

All that said, It seemed like everyone had a great time. I know i did. Tons of riding, drinking, people, and the Texas Twins race was possibly the most amazing race ever invented! There was a bit of craziness, but it was an amazing week.
