Sugino mix n' match for my fixie conversion

I'm replacing the crank/BB on my Schwinn '77 Super Le Tour fixie conversion. I ordered a pair of Mavic CXP-22s with the Formula flip/flop hub. According to Sheldon Brown's site, the chainline for those hubs is 42mm.

Sheldon's site also says that the only BB spindle length that will keep the 42mm chainline is a 103mm spindle. And the only BBs that do a 103mm spindle that they know of are the Phil Woods (too expensive) and the Sugino BB105, which they sell for $30.

I want to get my crankset/chainring in black and figured I'd go with the Sugino Messenger arms and 48t chainring. (Both available at Universal Cycles: Chainring link and crank link)

Everything looks like it matches up: the cranks are 130mm and so is the chainring. the Spindles are JIS sqaures...

So am I right? Can I go with the 103mm BB (68mm width with English thread), the Messenger cranks and the Messenger chainring?

Anyone else using the Formula Hubs try anything different?

Sugino has done something completely stupid, and now all of the RD cranks have a 45mm chainline on the 103 bottom bracket. I have no idea why. If you want to use these cranks you need to put them on a 107 BB and put the chainring on the inside. This will work fine with fomulas etc..., but some people don't like the look of having the chainring on the inside.

I don;t knoe--my sugino RDs work perfectly with the sugino 103 BB--no problems

i think he was saying they changed the RDs

Landgolier 08-18-07 05:33 PM

What are they stamped on the back? If the right has RD2R, then your chainline is probably off. Not enough to really make a huge difference, but to me it's enough that the extra noise and wear make it worth correcting.

but wait, are the Messenger line of cranks part of the RD family, or are they separate? The RD's that Universal sells are a lot more money than the Messengers. Will these still have the same problem that Langolier mentions for the RDs -- that they give a 45mm chainline instead of 42mm when installed with a 103 BB...

Yup, "Messenger" is just a label they slapped on the RD2's. It doesn't really make any sense, they're not even labeled as such, it's just an RD2 with the messenger ring. The info is at http://www.suginoltd.co.jp/singlespeeder_e.html, you'll see that the chainline ("C.L.") is 45 for all but the 75's.

I'm looking at universal's page, the messengers are $15 more and anodized black. They also have the RD-48, I'm not 100% sure which version those are, all kinds of junk has been screened onto the various models, it's the stamping that tells the truth.

I use an FSA 102mm BB with Sugino Messenger cranks with no problem.

Ziemas - I've been looking around for that 102 FSA, can't find it. Where did you pick it up?

I've asked him about it before, they don't make them any more and he got it out of a drawer in a shop in Latvia.

Exactly.

Yeah, it would be a lot funnier if that were something you just told people to mess with them and not the actual truth :P
