i just got this chainring. its an NOS sugino bmx ring. but on the backside, as you can see in the photo, the bolt holes are countersunk.
is this anything that i need to pay attention to? is some kind of spacer needed?

the head of the chainring bolt sits in the recess so that the bolt is flush with the chainring. no spacers are needed as long as you get short stack bolts.

really? cause the other side is what has the logo on it and it isnt recessed on that side. here's a photo.
on my ring that i just took off, there were no recessed holes.

i guess now im asking which side of the chain ring faces outward...the side with the logo or the side with the recessed holes?

It was probialy made to fit on the inside of the crankarm.

Sugino had a run of chainrings where they machined the countersunk lip on the wrong side. The rings didn't get an NJS stamp and sold for about half price. Looks like that's what you have -- at least if the countersunk lip is on one side and the lettering is on the other. There's no collectible value -- they were just clearing out several hundred of these things. You can turn the chainring around and mount it with the countersinking on the outside -- no problems.

ahh, i love it. good to know. so, suppose i mounted it with the lettering on the ouside and didnt use the recessed holes, would that be potentially dangerous or damaging? like i said, my last chainring had no recessed holes on either side.

...yeah, or it's an nos sugino bmx ring.
i.e. not one of the chainrings out of the messed up run. it's never going to get an njs approval.

He said in his first post that this was an old BMX ring.
I think the one he has was made with the intention of the crank being on the outside of the ring.

Dont sweat the holes, I have one of those, its gold too, I just mounted it up regular and didnt sweat that

I just got one of those chainrings as well. 110 BCD right?

I have an old set of sugino maxy BMX cranks and it looks like the chainring is meant to be mounted on the back of the spider as the front has rounded tabs and countersunk holes.

That would make sense with this ring, gets mounted on the back and both holes are countersunk.

i would flip my lid if i could find set of crank arms to match this bad boy. lucky duck.
