Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

New Track Bike! (pics)

Took some pics today, after finishing it up yesterday. The frame is an early 80s steel Zeus track frame with beautiful, subtle lugs. Sugino track crankset, 1/8 chain/ring/cog, geared 48/18 for now. 36H OpenPros on Miche hubs, TTT track bars (these ROCK!).

I took apart my fixed road bike to build this up; I'll rebuild the other bike when I have some more money to spend...

Here it is. More pics here: https://www.cs.pdx.edu/~marius/pics/track/

VERY nice. watch that chain tension though...you could probably take out a link and get the rear wheel closer to the seat tube, which will make the handling a little quicker, and probably make it easier to get a nice tension in the chain.

blah. i feel ****ing worthless right now.

hm, yeah, i have to figure out learn how the chain goes on/off on track bikes... if i remove a link and get the rear wheel closer to the tube, i won't be able to derail the chain by just moving the wheel all the way forward. i don't think so, at least... is it normal behavior to have to snap the chain whenever you want to get the wheel out with these dropouts?

the slack i have in the chain right now makes for a dead-quiet ride, btw. all you can hear when you spin the pedals is a really quiet rolling hum. these izumi chains rock.

Basicaly if you remove one link it will move the wheel 1/2 inch closer.. I know on mine I have it setup with a 19 on one side and 17 on the other. WHen I run the 19 it is Extremely close to end of the slots for the wheel there is probably 1/4 inch left and I can still push the wheel in enough to remove the chain. Basicaly what I do when I need to remove the wheel loosen the nuts push wheel in remove chain rap it around the dropout and pull wheel out.

You can let some air out of your tire to remove the tire if it gets too close to the seat tube.

Pedals look like Ritcheys Clipless...after I steal the bike from shrimpx, I will be putting my Ofmega tracks on there (just kidding-i 'd never get past the security guards to get near that bike).
That is the finest machine I have seen in a long time. Congrats on a sexy new beast

an alternative to bar tape is SOYO kierin grips. they're inSANELY tough to put on without a shop compressor, but once they're on, they're not coming off without some serious work. they're also kinda abrasive on hands at first, but after awhile it ain't so bad.

i have some on my track bike. i got a blood blister putting them on that didn't go away for a couple weeks...later i cut the ends off and slid them all the way up to the flats because that's where i keep my hands most of the time.

WHOA! that's like...three different types of grips!!....on ONE HANDLEBAR!!!

i'm not sure i understand the purpose though. the oury's are really comfy, but why not just do grip tape all the way up?

58 cm seat tube
57.5 cm top tube

it fits me just right.
it looks taller than my fixed gear but the fixed gear has a longer fork (for 27" wheels) so it works out to be the same overall height.

Jesus Shrimp, that bike is effin' amazing. I am just about as jealous as one can get concerning someone elses bicycle. Christ almighty what I wouldn't do for a bicycle that beautiful. I wouldn't even ride it, I'd hang it on my wall. That right there, that's not a mere bicycle, that is truly art.

thank you all for your compliments and suggestions.

i removed a link from the chain, and the rear wheel is much closer to the seat tube now. the chain is also snug-tight. the clearance between the rear tire and the thing where the brake hole would be, though, is now 3 or 4mm. really tight! i hope my rear wheel doesn't have that much up-down flex.
