Thought cog was loose

Then I tightened it, really tight. After I hit 10 miles of trails, it got worse and I realized that the aluminum chainring wore out around where it meets the crank. Has anyone had this problem and what are you're suggestions?

is it possible the chainring bolts were a bit loose and allowed some play around there, and then every time you put pressure on the cranks it ended up making the bolt holes bigger? it's never happened to me, but if it did, that's what i would guess. or i could be completely wrong about what you were describing. either way, sounds like you need a new chainring.

Chainring bolts usually fall out soon after loosening. They also make the chainring click very noisily against the spider.

What do you mean, "wore out"? A pic might be helpful.

I believe that the bolts that hold the crank arms to the crank may have been loose. My chainring is also the spider, no bolts. An odd curvy part (so that the chainring doesn't move without the pedals) got all messed up.

I plan on replacing chainring but I don't know what material to order.

I'm lost now. What kind of bike/crankset are you using? You may need a new crank arm, not just a chainring, if you wallowed it out on the BB spindle.

^ Wow, that must've been a nasty head-on...

Yeah, I'm also unsure what the OP is talking about...
"One-piece" style crank system and the spider got loose on the arm = new crank needed.

Chainring bolts loose - how the eff didn't you notice?

this happened to my chainring once. it was a really like alu ring, and it completely crushed.

it seriously looks like an egg. i guess i can use it biopace now, right?

the moral of the story: steel is real, tighten your chainring bolts and ride hard.
