Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Better without a Bike Computer?

Finally took of my cateye, after keeping a relatively detailed log of my rides for almost two years.

Finally going without it makes you realize how much of a crutch something so small can be. I'm still going through withdrawal, looking constantly at my empty handlebars to see how fast I am going.

But my bike looks better without all the wires, I'm not motivated by numbers, and I can actually enjoy and look around while I ride like I should have all along.

so what is everyones opinion on cycling computers? Helps or hinders?

I have a tenancy to compete with it, and it hinders my enjoyment, but makes me ride harder. I removed mine (cateye solar) like 20 years ago, and have been computer free since then.

My wife loves hers, and for some reason doesn't compete with it even though she's a very competitive person.

I felt like I was constantly watching my computer so I started leaving it off unless I was really riding hard and wanted to see how I was doing. But 90% of the time it stays of my steed.

I have one on my road bike for cadence/speed/distance and whatever. I dont think its really necessary on my fixed gear. Since I mostly ride it to get places, a watch is just as helpful as a speedometer.

These days I have lots of bikes, several with computers and several without. I ride fixed without as the whole fixed thing for me is largely about simplicity.

I like mine, but I always figure if you don't want to be a slave to it, get a cheap wireless and just carry it in your pocket or saddle bag. Very clean look, especially on the rear, and you can check distance and average if you want, and you can keep an eye on the overall miles on the bike for maintenance purposes or whatever.
