Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? It's really cold outside

How do you keep the air out of your eyes? Every time I step inside after riding, it feels like my eyes are going to explode.

Does anyone know if ski/snowboard goggles will fit over glasses? Keeping cold air away from my eyes would be nice, but it would be silly if I was blind.

I use a pair of shooting glasses, which are clear and inexpensive at your local sporting goods retailer. They are not terribly sexy or cool, but they were $7 and keep my eyes warm and free of snowflakes.

My trusty sunglasses do a good job of keeping my eyes from exploding. I've also got a pair with clear lenses for night riding.

this guy, we all know you don't ride a bike.

I either man up and just cry it out. Or use some nifty safety goggles I'll post a pic of when I ride.

Your location excludes you from the need to man up.

Everyone assumes I'm high on drugs anyway. So ehhh, cold, watery-red eyes through the winter. Southern winter.

yes, but you need to buy the ones made for that purpose. and be sure to try them on with your glasses before purchasing. different manufacturers have different clearance for spectacles

Where I'm from it's manly to cry. So I usually just ride around the block in the winter before dates. Chicks dig the tears.

It's 7 degree right now and it's actually really nice out for December (oh, how time flies) and it's perfect for some riding.

We had an early cold snap here and the temps dropped to -26C... if you ride at any speed wind burn can be a b****.

And it will get colder.

I guess eastern Iowa is way different from western Iowa. I dated a girl from Sioux City who never cried. Ever.

But OP, I wear sunglasses, scarf over my face and a beanie. The wind struggles to permeate my coverage. I used to have sunglasses -- admittedly female "diva" glasses -- that wrapped around my temples and kept the wind out.

What about some athletic goggles, like the kind pitchers wear when they take the mound? I know those are usually prescription, but there's gotta be some way to get non-prescribed ones. Ski goggles (I think) are too bulky. But hey, you might dig 'em.

Here are some fancy, slightly slimmer sunglasses. Expensive though. I'd consider the investment if it was cold more than half the year where you are. Maybe look into what crotch rocket riders wear (shop for this site is down). I'd imagine they face the same problem at higher speeds.

We had our first snow last night with averages around 25*F during the day. I'm from the Chicago area and am used to the cold, but this is my first winter on a bike so I wasn't really prepared for the cold air and central Illinois winds (Urbana-Champaign) trying to rip my eyes out.

While my eye sight isn't absolutely horrid, it's pretty bad. I like the sleekness of sports/motorcycle goggles and sunglasses, but being able to see has to be the priority here. Ski goggles on a bike would look stupid, but it'd at least allow me to retain my vision if I could fit my normal glasses under them. I suppose I could spring for a pair of prescription whatever, but that'll be pretty $$. Or if I modernized and got myself some contacts...
