And to the kid talking about some mutant new insane pitbull, you're a ****ing idiot. Give any moron a strong dog, and if they want, they will beat the dog into being a terror. It has nothing to do with pitbulls, and I'm sick of naive idiots like you perpetrating this myth. It's because of people like you that cities, counties, and states are considering breed specific legislation.
There is no such thing as a "pitbull". That is a term people that know nothing about dog breeds attribute to any "aggressive" looking dog with a large head and short fur. I've worked with my girlfriend, a vet student, on displays which required the audience to determine which dog is an actual "american pit bull terrier", and not one person ever gets it right. No one can tell teh difference between a cane corso, presa canario, dogo argentino, etc.
That's the last I'll say on the subject to avoid getting this thread too off topic, but breed legislation and misconceptions about pitties are something i care strongly about, and I'm sick of everyone that doesn't have a clue about the dogs getting chased by some scary dog and claiming it was a Pit bull.

I've had the most success with standing my ground and sockin' the pooch right in the schnoz. Just keep your riding gloves on in case you catch a tooth or two.

I've had good luck with the "get off your bike approach". But, in the last decade, I've seen a new sort of pitbull, both in Houston and San Antonio. This is a breed of pitbull raised purely to fight and attack. After one of these "insane" pitbulls launches an attack, either you die, or the dog dies.
These dogs are being bred in large numbers, both in inner-city ghetto neighborhoods, and out in rural wooded areas (where the cops are seldom around). They are not raises by "responsible" people, and often escape their pens and begin to hunt around the neighborhood for someone to tear apart. Last year, two people (a child and an elderly man) were killed in just a week by pitbull attacks.
So, for the new "insane" pitbull, you need to ride FAST. But, if he catches you, there is only one outcome. You must kill him. Or he will kill you.
(Someone will post to say: "My pitbull Muffie is sweet and gentle and she lets my baby pull on her ears"....these folks have never MET, SEEN, or RUN from the new breed of insane pitbulls being raised at every public housing project and every rural trailer park in south Texas).

I second this statement.. When I was in high school in N. Houston and into road riding I never rode with a can of mace in my jersey pocket. Seriously it's kill or be killed with those things sometimes https://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?se...cal&id=4988044

it's doesn't really matter what you want to call them, the fact is that South and East Texas has a serious agressive dog problem. And the dogs in question usually look alike and are offend (whether correctly or incorrectly) referred to as Pit Bulls.
I say this not as a dog hater but a dog lover, my roommate has a "pit bull" and I play with it regularly and walk it offend. I have nothing against dogs of any breed but I have a serious problem with the breeding of the types of pit bulls I've seen in Texas.

I've been chased by many-a-dog in my life.. Best solution is to pedal hard and pray...
Get off my bike? HA! Been there and got the bite scars to prove it...

Does mace actually work?
I've been bitten three times in three years, and though I understand the theory, my instinct is not to stick around and box, with my bike as my gloves, with threatening dogs.

When I lived in Bushwick, not Williamsburg, but deep in Bushwick off Myrtle ave, every night when I'd get home from working in Dumbo, I'd get chased on my bike by this nasty f u cking pitbull. It grabbed my pant leg one night and scared the s h i t out of me.
I ended up calling animal control to get the dog off the streets.

This threads always draw the guys who say "My pitbull is a sweetie who sleeps in bed with my kids". Last week in Dallas, Texas, one of these "little sweeties"....the lovable family pet who slept with the kid, ate the kid.
The "Modern Pitbull" circa 2007...the breed of dog for people too dumb to own a dog and too dumb to raise children.
The folks who own "sweetie" pitbulls like to pretend that there are two different breeds of dogs, one gentle, sweet and stable and another IDENTICAL looking dog that is insanely aggressive. Not true. They are simply two versions of a sawed off shotgun. One has already gone off. The other one is gonna go off sooner or later.
So, take lots of photos of your kids. Something to remember them by AFTER the gun goes off.
