Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

riding in ireland

I just moved here to galway, looking for some fixed riders- i saw a girl today on her pista and i chased her down for like two blocks, but she got away! Anyway, if there are any of you out there in ireland, lemme know. So far i've seen mostly crummy rusted mountain bikes.

next time if you disable the girl while you're chasing her she'll have a harder time escaping.

There are a lot of fixed riders in Dublin, mostly messengers. The Worlds was there this year, after all. I don't know about Galway, because I haven't been there since I was a kid, but you should be able to find some people to ride with.

I just came back from Ireland including Galway. I fully intended on getting in some rides while I was over there, but man, it seems like suicide – Irish drivers are crazy and the roads are really narrow. In the end, I decided not to risk it and I really didn't have enough time to get in a proper ride anyway. If I lived over there I definitely would hook up with a local cycle club and ride with them before I ventured out on my own. BTW, I was out in the Aran Islands (Inishmore) and that seems like it would be a great couple hour ride on a cross bike or a great long day ride from Galway. Make sure to hike up to Dún Aengus while you're there. There's lots of cycle parking at the base of the trail. It's really spectacular; you will not be disappointed.

track bikes aren't popular in Ireland, only in the courier scene, the rest are all roadies or ****ty mountain bikes, im surprised you saw anyone in galway fixed, especially a lady, what brings you to galway might i ask?

you've got that right- I spotted a pretty nice conversion the other day too (which i'm far more inclined to appreciate than another pista) but no rider in sight.

I'm over here just for a semester studying, a junior year abroad kind of thing. It is great, but i've been here for two weeks now and i've ridden a bike once- my legs are going soft! i just don't have it in me to buy a pos mountain bike! (i really really want one of these older postman bikes to do a conversion on! they are really slick.)
