Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

gear choice for gravel roads

How many gear inches do you like for riding on gravel roads?

Single speed (with freewheel).
700x32 cyclocross tires.
Some flat road and some moderate rolling hills.
Training ride pace (fastest I can sustain for 2 hours).

42x17 with 32 cross tires. Rolling hills, steep stuff, pavement, gravel, whatever happens to be on the ride. I do a pretty good bit of gravel riding, this is the profile of a recent loop. The most of the steep stuff is gravel.

I'm running 38/16 fixed with 34mm cyclocross tubulars on typical New England dirt road, fire road and single track.

For the rougher stuff I flip my hub to 38/20
