Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

SS braking question

I just bought a 2002 Bianchi Pista frame that I'm slowly but surely building up. My rear wheel has a flip-flop hub on it, and I'd like to go SS on one side, fixed on the other. My question is this: the frame doesn't have a hole drilled for a rear brake, so if I had it as a SS I'd be riding it with just a front brake. My current SS is a road bike conversion, so it has front and rear brakes - is this a dumb idea? I don't really know if people do this, so I wanted to be sure. The front brake is an Ultegra, and pretty nice, but I wanted to get a sense of whether people do this, or whether I should stick to 2 brakes for a SS.

On a related note, any recommendations on cranks? I'd like 170mm, but beyond that, I'm more or less open to anything.

Thanks

you want 2 brakes for SS.. in case one fails..

in a fixed gear you only need a front one b/c you can backpedal to slow...

You always want a rear brake in case traction is bad---you will eat **** if your front wheel skids, but if your rear wheel skids you just fishtail and look badass. However, people do run ss with a front brake only. If youre comfortable with the risk you can probably get away with it. Personally I'd just run the pista as a fg only.

Do not run it with just a front brake. You'll be dead within 5 days.
