Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? What to do with the old racing frame? Make a neat commuter!
All Shimano 600 stuff with a bunch of parts I didn't put on my other bikes. It doesn't currently have pedals because I only have one set of power grips and they are on my fixed gear at the moment.

Everything works great except that I'd like to have something other than tape build up (like a custom hood or something) around the end of the bar.

Edit: Haha I just realized that I posted in this thread three years ago about making this bike.

man, all this research on multigeared bikes is getting to me....
i thought i was much more knowledgeable about bikes in general building a few fixed gear bikes, but this foray into multi gears is making my head spin....

i guess im just worried about compatibility....wheelsets with my frame, hub with cassette, cassette with derailleur, derailleur with shifters, bla bla bla....

Sheldon Brown's site has all you need to know. Gear's aren't that flummoxing. Though I have found that the mid level parts are nearly always easier to work on than the higher end (very delicate) or the really low end (don't hold calibration).

1982 Schwinn Caliente. Just finished putting the new Continental Ultra Sport tires and new Kalloy Uno seat post. Started out red but recently got new copper paint, tires, seat post, cables and housings, custom bull horns, stem and $5 seat. Would really like a black stem and crank but that will be another day.

I rarely ever get to ride with friends just for fun anymore, but had a great day with lots of riding around downtown Cleveland and the west side. Ate lunch and dinner on W25th. hy

illdthedj I still haven't seen your complete build. What are you going to do about the front shifter?

its basically done! waiting on just a back brake to come in from ebay.
actually, its a front LONG reach (50-70mm) brake. newer modern back brakes have a super short bolt, and it wont reach all the way thru the brake bridge of older frames like mine. but i noticed i could totally use the ultegra front brake i have on it now. soooo ordered another front, for the back.

will post pics soon! even took it on a short ride lol (just 1 front brake, kinda dangerous but i wanted to make sure the gears shifted fine, they do!)

oh and the front shifter is a dura ace barend hooked up to a paul thumbie! i like it allot!

Any suggestions for improvements? Dont suggest a second brake.
Im seriously considering switching to fixed, new wheels in the spring and if i do go fixed, thatd be the time to do it.
Also considering bullhorns, looking for some small reach minimalistic ones (short torso), sort of like a flip and chop, but i would never do that to the current bars, theyre too nice.

Second brake. And seriously, get hoods. I had cross brakes/no hoods once and it was one of the more idiotic builds I've ever run.
