Anyone ridden a GT Peace 9r?

Performance has these guys for around 450 bucks right now. I think it's calling my name.

are those verticle dropouts on a SS mtb bike with no der hanger? That seems silly.

A ton of SS MTB's have Eccentric bottom brackets. Makes things a lot easier if you want to run disc brakes.

... which would make sense if this frame even had disc brake tabs.

The new ones have disc brakes, an EBB, and are sexxxy.

We had one at the shop. We couldn't get the set screws to hold the bottom bracket in place. Some good crankin' and the BB would slip and you'd lose chain tension. I tried some slightly longer screws and that seemed to work better, but a quick ride on the local trails and the tension was gone again.

and it's like $650.

i actually bought this 07 Peace 9r and returned it a week later. the seatpost would not stop slipping no matter what i tried on it. i bought the redline monocog 29er for $440 instead and am very happy with it.

Does the Monocog run discs?

The monocog has disc-capable hubs, and disc mounts on the frame and fork, but comes stock with rim brakes. The Monocog Flite has discs.

+ like 400 bucks on the price. If I'm spending $900 on a bike, I'd honestly rather spend a bit more and build a Karate Monkey.

I'm definitely curious if the peace 9r that Performance has on sale has discs or not. They say it's an '07 but the photo shows V-brakes.

Why would you rather spend $900 on a KM than the Redline flite? The Flite is lighter and has better standover, and sliding vertical dropouts. Just curious.

I know it seems kind of silly. I've wanted one since I've known that they existed, and if I'm dropping that kind of money on something it might as well be the bike I've lusted after for a long time. Don't get me wrong, I know the Flite is a better bike for the $$$, I just know that I'd always be thinking that I could have bought a KM.

It's the same part of me that bought a 10 year old Jeep instead of a 4 year old Focus.

the Peace 9r on sale at Performance is the 07 model and has V-brakes. they are actually one grade better quality on both the levers and the brakes than the Tektros on the Redline Monocog. i believe the hubs are disc compatible, but the fork and the rear drops do not have disc tabs.

at the price i definitely rec the Redline over the GT. Read the Redline reviews on MTBR, many a happy customer, with nobody feeling they over paid.

FYI--

Use code 6002384 at Performance TODAY and get the bike for $359.

I wish I didn't give into new SIDIs and rollers last week .

2008 colors suck. Bring back the white. The BB issues have been sorted now, apparently.

BB slippage issues: wouldn't a well-cleaned/degreased BB and BB shell solve those?
No disk-brake tabs: I really don't see what's the big issue. Rim brakes are plenty strong and sufficient for 95% of the mountain biking. Of course, diskbrakes look nicer I guess (but also to the thieves). If you want super-strong rim brakes, buy a couple of Magura HS-33s, and you get a ton of stopping power, better than most hydraulic diskbrakes.
Parts: as a non-US buyer, I couldn't care less, because I couldn't have the bike shipped to me anyway, only the frame. Plus, I wouldn't want a splined BB spindle anyway. Square taper for me - so I'd be forced to pull out and junk the BB and the crankset anyway.

All in all, I love the GT, but have already bought and built up the Monocog. I'm pleased with it, don't get me wrong, but having to center the wheel in the rear dropouts is something I am not so keen on. That's when the EBB is gold.
