Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I feel your pain, I fell over when a really cute girl commented on my balance skills at a red light. As I looked up and kind of did a double take I ended up eatin ***** (I know, I suck, suck like a fox).

Never fallen. I run clipless so I can click out of either foot in a fraction of a second if it comes to that.

Not I, but I saw some guy fall over his bars while doing a trackstand that didn't look all that bad.... I chuckled a second realizing I'd probably do the same thing. I felt bad because it was FREEZING out that day

ha, i down it like five times. i dont think you can consider yourself a real fixed gear rider (in the city at least) if you havent fallen at a light

this is funny cause i was talking with my friend the other day about this, and just how people must think you have no idea how to ride a bike. but they really have no idea what is going on.

If you haven't done a 0mph fallover at a light you aren't trying hard enough to impress the people around you.

And always remember:

Cuts and broken bones heal.
Paint scratches and dents don't.
Know your priorities.

what do you think trackstanding is for if not to impress people? I mean, the entire fixed gear scene exists purely for the purpose of showing others that we are more hardcore than them.

If I didn't need to prove anything to anybody, I'd be riding a hybrid.

Probably still wouldn't put brakes on it though...

On my one trackstanding fall, I totally took the hit rather than scratch my new powdercoat.

lol

Even better:
Started to fall, akwardly tried to pull my foot out of the strap, toppled, somehow got my brakelever INTO my glove on the way down, and ended up wedged with the tires between the curb and the street and my body against a truck tire. Luckily, the guy in the truck saw what happend and didn't wrap me around his front wheel on the green light. Once I got myself back up and organized, I decided to put in some trackstanding practice time before I did it in traffic again. Please keep the stories coming so I don't feel like the biggest asshat in the world.

yeah I ate **** sideways about 4 months ago at a very very busy 5 lane one-way intersection in Osaka. Had a few beers in me, but really not enough to warrant a fall. Had my feet in the straps, both, which was a mistake after having a few. Very funny though, I just lay there for 10 seconds laughing. My friend was just looking down at me, with a pitiful look in his eyes, and a strained laugh that said, I think this is funny but more embarassing than anything else. I will point out that he was not on his piste bike at the time, but a folding single speed (probably running about 40/19) and big branding on the down tube (no top tube) saying 'HAPPY TOWN', so I shot him back an equally pitiful glance.
I am on my back with a bike laying on top of me, but at least it is an Eimei! ;(

I have always opted to be uncool and can unstrap just as fast as someone can unclip.

I guess that stems from rding with straps on my pedals for better than 20 years.

I forgot to unclip once when I was first starting with the clipless. Another time I had a frame over my shoulder and rolled up to a light. I unclipped left but started tipping right cause of the frame. I sort of panicked and tipped over with the cranks of the spare bike going into my side. It hurt my gut almost as much as my ego. Never fallen while track standing but I've had a couple close calls attempting backwards circles.

i feel over twice because i was wearing some really beat up slip ons that had some rubber that would get caught on the strap on my right foot which is always my pull out foot.

you'd think after the first time i woulda learned. but no.

two kids:"are you ok?"

me:"yeah, dumb shoes, oh well"

one kid sorta whispering:"dude, that sucks, don't laugh so much"

other kid:"dude, it was still ****ing funny!"

i don't wear those shoes anymore.
