Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

To "Tommy Cannondale", the NYPD cop in Central Park

It was good to meet you last night and find out some of you guys patrolling the park nightly are cyclists as well (both fixed gear and roadies).

Rock on....though you really gotta get off the "can-o-whale" train....I mean come on....

Last night I skid-stopped at a stop sign since there was a police van about to head through the intersection. The cop in the passenger seat shouted out the window "No brakes!" as they drove off.

Haha, some of my friends had said the same thing to me. Part of the reason why I stopped (besides it being bad form to cut off a police van while running a stop sign) was that it looked like they weren't going to stop at the stop sign themselves. However when they saw me the did stop. So either they had brakes or they did the foot-on-the-tire thing.

The image of the NYPD rolling Flintstones style amuses me greatly....

The guy I talked too wasn't on a bike, he was in one of those golf cart thingies, he had a name for it but to be honest I was distracted by the cute asian girl in tight jeans that walked by where were were standing when he was geeking out on it. I've never seen NYPD bike cops in central park, I've seen dudes on horses and the motorcycle (CHIPS style) guys though.

Come to think of it I've never seen NYPD bike cops, ever....

Sorry, I was thinking about the asian chick in the tight jeans again...

What was I saying?

I dunno...there's this latina mami who rides around broadway uptown in the summer in a skintight nypd jumpsuit (don't think she is a cop tho) and she is BAAAAAD!. (e tem bundao! demais!)...

ran lights slowly in front of her to see if she would put up chase. no cigar. circled around along side her to see if she wanted to ticket me. no cigar. if my guard was ever down for the oinkers, that was it

He probably got a DNA sample while you weren't looking. Now you're on the fixie database.

I guess some of you guys will appreciate this.

I've been saying it and I'll say it again: chicks on bikes are 17.5% hotter than average.
Strangely enough, I've never seen a coppette on a bike, ever. Anyone leses from 'round my place readint this? Have you?

Nobody asked the crucial question: does Tommy "Cannondale" read BFSSFG?

Semi-on-topic:

I was in Covington, KY and noticed that the bicycle police there road CX bikes. Plus they looked like they rode CX competetively. Usually I look at a bike cop and it's some fat old guy riding an ill-fitting mountain bike that weighs 50 pounds. These guys looked like they could catch me, easily.

I got whistled at by a female bike cop after trackstanding at a light waiting for traffic to clear. She was writing up a guy in a Cadillac just after the intersection. At first I didn't realize where the cat call came from, but when I looked back the two cops were standing beside their bikes giggling.

Double standards I say.
