you might get more answers and less snark (and no, I'm neither from NY, nor trying to start any arguments here... he's just asking a city-specific question) if you post this in fixed.gr/nyc
also, as far as I can help, you might need to post more information, i.e. what build you're riding, how heavy you are, whether you maintain good tire pressure/spoke tension, etc...

Watching where you are going, the ability to bunny-hop on a fixed gear, good bike handling skills (or a MTN bike background) help on all NYC streets, Conti Ultra gatorskins at 90+psi and tank like hoops all help.

deep v's or open pros are the way to go if you plan on thrashing the hell out of your bike. aeroheads are pretty common around as well, but i recommend you get nimble as all hell if you wanna keep 'em longer than a year.
but welcome to brooklyn! come out to Los Marcos Mayhem this saturday, the Rat Pack Hustle on monday, and the fifteen dozen other events going on the week after!

serious answer... al ot of the above, PLUS get to know some of NYC's fine mechanics....
Bicycle Station on Vanderbilt ave, Affinity Cycles on Grand and Lorimer, Bike Doctor on Grand are all fine Brooklyn shops.
Try Bikeworks on Ridge (!!!), Continuum on AVe B, Trackstar wherever they are - i think coolville, Bike Habibtat on Lafeyette, Manhattan Velo on E17 st and NYC Velo on 2 ave for downtown manhattan shops.
Many many more around town. alot of folks will help you keep your ride tight.

definitely. CK just listed the best spots in town without question.
manhattan velo is a bit tucked away, but the guys there are really solid.

alternatively, walk your bike everywhere you go, including over the Williamsburg Bridge into Manhattan to that cool new spot in the LES. And only carry a single mini-EV lock to lock up your frame but not your wheels because bike thieves in NYC aren't very creative and absolutely none of them carry tools with them.

I find tubulars help a lot. Low PSI, but not too low. Learning how to avoid potholes and how to shift my weight. Stuff like that.
