Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What to do?

What to do?

I am in a predicament right now with my local bike shop. They have been trying to sell me this bianchi pista fixed gear for like 6 months now and they finally qouted me a decent price, $450 down from $580. But, my plans over the winter were to slowly acquire parts on my single speed to make it a fixed gear and then buy a new frame and fork in the spring. What do you guys think, do one or the other or go nuts and become the owner of three fixed gears.

You can always sell the older bike.

I had you, I think, until the last random combo of words in your post. What is your problem?

I think the solution is simple... we should eat our country's babies.

(sorry, couldn't resist because of your screen name)

I'd say acquire the components that you want, then spring for a frame fork when you can rather than settling for a stock bike just because it's there.

I am kinda sentimental about the old bike its just a converison but I can't imagine wanting to rid myself of it. The pista I have been looking at for a long time but haven't considered it lately until I was in the shop today and the shop guys made me an offer. I am still up in the air though in regards to what frame i am even considering in the future. So this pista being my first fixed gear is very tempting.

edit: I see you're trying to get a first fixed. Go for the Pista. The ease of buying a stock bike is really nice. Doing the conversion is fun if you can do it quickly, but if you just want to get started riding, you can always convert later when you find a frame you just can't resist.

oh, well in that case go for it. In your first post I got the feeling that you weren't really into the pista other than the deal you were getting on it.

go crazy and become the owner of three bikes. why? why not?!?! if you can afford it, do it. you will have your trusty conversion (to either keep as a memory piece, bad weather beater, or loaner to friends depending on how you feel), your new pista for a cummuter/daily ride, and build up the new bike you want with all fancy parts and take it out to the track/alleycat/ride nights to show off and/or race.

makes perfect sense to me! that's exactly how i'd do it.

the one problem you'll have is that you're only going to want to ride the nice bike because, if built right, it will be such a joy to ride...

My advice: keep the singlespeed, buy the pista, enjoy your family and friends and have a positive attitude towards all people.

ride your current bike and accumulate parts for it. since its going to be winter soon this might be the better idea. then when spring and summer comes, get a new frameset. its better in the long run.

what type of build were you planning on doing? How much did you want to spend? With winter coming I would want a foul weather bike (your old SS) and a sunny day bike (shiny new pista!).

offer them $400 and/or accept $450 with a few upgrades thrown in (like a front brake set up)

my hey!-scored-a-deal feeling always overweighs any I-didn't-really-need-that feeling

buy the pista and systematically swap out all the parts. throw the stock crank and wheels on a road bike and sell it for $200-300. along with the seat and maybe the bars. don't forget to buy a new crank and wheels
keep the frame I guess and if you are itching to have a project and/or be different powder coat it with your newfound wealth.

nothing wrong with having more than 2 bikes. BTW the whole thing about the pista is exactly what my friend did. he converted a frame, got some custom wheels with formulas, traded those wheels and built up some wheels with Pauls and a new crank. Bought a Pista, switch over the wheels and crank. Sold the Pista for $300 to a friend. and then continued to poor more money into his bike.. Don't bother if you don't like the pista to begin with but for $150 ($450-$300),you get bars, BB, fork and headset.

ramble, ramble, ramble
