Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? timeframe 15-30 seconds.
You'd think it's easy, but in reality, it's not at all.

"...cutting the rear rim is much harder than you might think. Since the rim is under substantial compression due to the tension on the spokes, it would pinch a hacksaw blade tight as soon as it cut partway through. Then there are the wire beads of the tire, also difficult to cut."

I think he was talking about the front rim, and first cutting the spokes before tacoing, not cutting the rim.

Yeah, he was referring to just taking a bolt cutter to the spokes, which would go through them like butter, and then deforming the wheel to fit through the bike rack space.

Also, from the quote you gave us it would easy to avoid pinching the blade of a hacksaw by simply cutting from the outside in (tire, tube, bead, then rim) than inside out (rim, bead, tube, tire). The spoke tension would then help you by pulling the rim apart.

Is it wrong that I felt sick when I read that, as if I were reading some autopsy/surgery thing?

That sounds incredibly noisy and messy. I'd think the hub was the limiting factor, and deforming everything to get that angled the right way to fit through would be brutally tough.

I've never tried, though, so I could be wrong.

No, that's not true. The spoke tension doesn't really 'pull apart' per se, the forces try to pull the entire rim in, and the tension of the rim distributing that force around itself ends up making the rim pinch in from either side a lot. You'd have to clip a lot of the spokes to eliminate that.

The thread was already crushed when TheTrippleC posted his wild "commuter/lockup" bike.

Hey man, I had some extra time today before work so I stopped by the shop where I originally found the fender and they had one. Check it:

I looked around online but i couldn't find it anywhere. I did however find something similar...

I got mine from a shop called Liberty Cycles on 9th Ave between 55 & 56th for $14 bones...

They said they get them from one of their distributors in Jersey. I'm sure they could order one for you if you like...

Here's what it looks like mounted on my bike for those just joining this thread:

Oh nice one! If you end up getting it be sure to post it up. Actually, maybe we should start a separate fender thread?...
