    getting rusted pedals off the cranks...

    my conversion has road pedals that are rusted on, is there anything i can try soaking them on to get the rust off?

    Automatic transmission fluid works quite well for removing rust if you can let the parts soak a bit.

    When someone would leave my tools out in the rain I'd just toss them in a pail with some atf and leave them overnight, next day just wipe them down and they were almost like new.

    I had some pedals stuck on my conversion, they were rusted, bent, and only had grips on one side, the other was smooooooth, and I had to remember to flip each pedal over if I ever took my foot off.

    I tried a pedal wrench, then some WD-40 and let it soak.

    Then I took a wrench, and my trusty cheater bar (an old Steal mountain bike flat bar) and gave it a bit of torque (Just remember that one side will be reverse threaded!!!) and they came right off.

    make sure you clean off the threads before putting on new pedals! Nothing ruins a crankset like stripped threads

    +2 on the WD-40.

    Back when I used to work on cars, I was dealing with a particularly rusty VW and I used some stuff the shop had that used some chemical that created an exothermic reaction with the iron oxide--resulting in the rusted part getting so cold that the rust itself would become brittle and easy to break free. It came in a aerosol can, and was made by a company with a german name. I can't remember what it was called, but if anyone else knows this stuff, it works incredibly well. An auto parts shop might know it.
