Funny how our local "alternative" (read: wish they were as cool as the Portland Mercury) newspaper, Williamate Weekly, just did an article on how Portland is not as much as it's cracked up to be because two people died recently in bike-car accidents, and how we can do things better.

the stereotype of people drinking and smoking while riding brakeless bikes is a joke, but the part about calling the cops is for real. if you read the rest of the context of the article on williamate weekly's website, you'll see that it's an entirely serious editorial on how to improve bicycling in portland.

It kills me to be 100 miles south. I miss riding in portland, however I think that the same appreciation for the sport carries itself throughout the valley. Eugene has a similar feel just full of way more moron college kids swerving and wandering aimlessly. That and it's eugene, not up to snuff but still a blast at times.

Now people from NY who are too afraid to bike in their city will invade ours.
Is it just me or have the NY papers been infatuated with PDX this year? Ive heard of several mentions of it in their papers.
Pretty soon that whole small close community feeling will be gone when all of us who live have to move to gresham or troutdale when the rent keeps going up.
Oh and the Mercury did have a bike article following the WW one. Though a week late, rather than simply regurgitating what the Oregonian said the Mercury tried to aid the biking community by naming the most dangerous intersections, which will hopefully be improved before too long.

No one's going to move to the burbs if they have any interest in getting around the majority of the time by bike, the sensible idea is moving to North Portland or somewhere still in teh city itself but not the expensive areas. Probably why most bike messengers I know of live up in NoPo or NE.
Either way I highly doubt a good bulk of New Yorkers would fit in in Portland at all.

Portland is a great city for biking. The paper should have asked that you call the police when you see NAZI BOB in his suv or pickup running red lights with a beer in one hand and a Doral 100 in the other.
