for my loose-ball bearing headsetters only...
so...I had a hand-me-down old (loose-ball) headset that came with my old road bike, that got converted, switched to diff bikes, etc.
not untill recently did the pittedness of the races frustrate me as to where I was not being able to adjust my set as I would like....so, I ordered a $5 tange passage to replace...
what a difference a headset (especially a new fork crown race) makes! this is amazing. 's like gliding on ice...riding with no hands is so much easier. I've got it adjusted perfectly and it is smooth and looose, yet with no play whatsoever. amazing. I wonder if chris king's are this smooth.
I like overhauling loose bearing parts tho, and doing a headset is pretty easy, so I think I'll just be trying to do very periodic maintenance. (maybe once a month or few weeks in the winter), especially as I much of the time end up not rocking a fender. and, ****...at $5 a pop, unless there is some quickly degenerative aspect of these, I can't really see myself upgrading. hmm...maybe I'll try the $10 tange levin...lol
anyone else love their loose-ball headsets? how often do you maintain? how long with proper maintenance might I expect this to stay in mint condition? how long have yours lasted?

No, Tange-Seiki Passage wholesales for like $5, so he probably has a hook up.
I just installed one myself, and I'm very impressed with it. I'm not sure how long it'll hold up, but I'm gentle on my rides and I haven't had any headset trouble before. By the way, it's not a loose-ball headset. The bearings are in a retainer unless you removed them. I'd recommend keeping them in the retainer simply because of the ease of rebuilding. You probably wouldn't notice a difference.

the term "loose ball" is used to contrast against cartridge types. almost all "loose ball" headsets come with retainers.

I like loose ball headsets and many of many bikes still have them... the lifespan can be amazing if the headset and bearings are of good quality (Tange makes excellent headsets btw).
Removing the retainer and adding more ball bearings is a good practice and makes a good headset even better.
