Stubborn BB drive side cup

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove an extremely stubborn BB cup?

The non-drive side cup came out with a load of effort but the drive side one mocks me with it's Ghandhi like immovability.

It's maddening.

It doesn't help that the cup has shallow splines which doesn't help the Park Tools tool get up in there.

Any suggestions? Euthanasia?

Is it splined? I put an FSA splined bottom bracket remover onto a torque wrench, and eventually it came off.

Are you sure you have to remove the drive side cup? You should never remove it unless you're selling the frame and keeping the bottom bracket, or else replacing the BB all together.

Yes, the damn thing is splined. I am currently using the torque wrench, but it's hard to get leverage because the BB cup's splines are so shallow.

I believe that I have to remove the d-side cup and yes, I am replacing the bottom bracket all together.

To be clear, I had an electric torque wrench. It was the cheap, $20 one from Harbor Freight. It took a little bit of time, when it seemed like I wasn't making any progress, but eventually I broke the seal and it spun off.

You are spinning it to the right.. right?

you can saw it out by hand, carefully

or spot weld a junk tool to it, and then rip it out

Right, the drive side is reverse threaded so you have to go clockwise (right) to take it off and countercloskwise (left) to put it on

sheldon is the man. Go to the hardware store and make yourself one of these for $2.

https://sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/bbcups.html

Its awesome. i got the drive-side shell out of my old frame after even a few shops had given up on it.

note, it will help to take other cup to the store to size everything up, since you still need enough room to get the socket into the cup. You can also get by with just one lock washer instead of 4.

It will probably gouge the cup up too much for reuse, but you were going to put a nice sealed BB in anyways. Right?

^ I doubt that will work very well on a cartridge unit. But it rocks for loose ball BB's.

Normally the cure for this is to get a rear wheel quick release, run it through the BB spindle, use that to lock down the tool to the splines, and go at it with renewed vigor. You do have to use a wrench rather than a driver to turn the tool, obviously. If it's not a hollow spindle BB, you can just get a long M8 bolt and some washers to hold the tool on. Don't forget the renewed vigor, though, that **** is key.

I remember wrecking my first adjustable spanner trying to get a hatta bb off without realising it had a reverse thread. Baka. I should have learnt from working on cars for so long, but oh well. At least the spanner was messed up, and the bb/shell came out fine....(!)

Put a 5 foot bar on your wrench, this is called a persuader bar, then you hold it in place while a friend turns it. Things will move.*

*Things to move may not always be the things you intend to move. I once twisted an allen wrench into a pretzel with a persuader bar.

Thanks for the advice guys. After a couple of days of frustration and sore hands, I simply took it to my LBS where they promptly removed cup.

I had to buy a new wrench after the whole experience because I stripped the sockets.

I will keep the words of wisdom in mind down the road though. Thanks!

Yes, if at first you don't succeed, pay someone else to do it.
