Official Zip Tie Thread

Does the zip tie on the rear (or front) method really have any truth to it? (Edit: For snow riding)
Has anyone actually tried this?
If so how many ties do you use?

Please share your experiences here.

EDIT And I know about cross tires but don't really want to purchase a set since I am a college student, but I might have to.

PS With the above statement does anyone know how wide of tires my Pista will allow for.

I have no idea what the zip tie on the rear method is, but I love me some zip ties. My last car was pretty much entirely held together with them.

Zip tie method meaning zip ties around your tire and rim for a snow wheel?

Never tried it, but it definitely wouldn't work with a brake.

I assume you mean the zip-ties around the tire, in an effort to approximate snow chains?

It wasn't the "official" thread, you see.

I'd be afraid of the ties denting or otherwise damaging my rim. The aluminum there is pretty thin and not meant for that kind of force.

If you do this, recommend you go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get some of those big zip ties (in the electrician aisle). Them are more gnarly. Then try it and send photos. Clearly there is a need for an experiment and sounds like you are the man for the job. Aren't you expecting a big snowfall tonight?

By the way: Bronze the Fonz ! https://promo.onmilwaukee.com/bronzethefonz/

I love Milwaukee.

No idea but don't use it on a wheel used with a rim brake.

Unless your rims are made of foil, it will not hurt them. It is made for even more than that kind of force, considering your spokes don't pull through your rim.

i am not expecting a huge snow fall but it is snowing very steadily right now. i will go grap some zip ties tonight and try it out later tonight when i have to go to class. i dont have access to a home depot or anything so i will most likely just grab some regular old ties.

Good question. The tire side on front, rim-side on back? Is it possible that rim-side the tire may actully lose traction during a very slippery turn? OP: please maintain good cruising speed for the sake of science. You should also ride your route once prior in similar conditions so the experiment has a control.

I plan on doing this if I don't build my MTB in time...

I may switch my front brake to a rear and run the zips on the front tire.

I tried this monday as we had a pretty nasty 6" snowfall followed up with freezing rain then straight-up rain this weekend.

Attempt #1 was with zip ties ~1/8" wide (8.5" long uncut). They worked well for the first 2 miles on ice then came off in about 1 mile on dry pavement. As pictured I have beefier ~3/16" wide zip ties (16" long uncut). Haven't riden yet but I am afraid these will come off too. They are thicker and less flexible than the ones I first tried and a few cracked while zipping them to the tires. Couple that with <20* temps and i'm pretty sure they will become more brittle.

So in my experience they seem to work well in packed snow and ice, but bare pavement seems to take them off.

For reference i'm 6'3" and 200# tires were 700c x 28 running at 80 psi (max is listed at 120psi). Maybe a lighter rider would have better luck.

For me this solution is temporary as tonight i'm building up the 'il pompino' by wife got me for my b-day, can't wait to put on and ride the studded nokians...

Yes, my wife gave me a 'pompino' for my birthday...
