Bigger front chainring= cooler looking bike?
I saw a seller on online that sells 3/32" front chainrings as big as 60t.
He said that the 60t would be 9 1/4" across
How baddass would that be?
The only problem is I'd have to run a 19t or 20t in the back...
Rad o no?

Sorry, the big ring up front only looks cool if you have a small one in back. Otherwise it just looks like you're trying to be a masher but don't have the gumption. They make much better frisbees.

I currently have a 48t. The 60t is a little crazee.
Maybe a 55t or 56t for purely aesthetic reasons.

^That pista was purpose built for one hill climb race.
Anyway, chainrings are like wheels on a car. It's a scale and proportion thing to me. You won't see 22" rims on my civic or 60 tooth chainrings on my bike.

I started a thread in the track forum about chainring size versus gear inches. the consensus is that sprinters like small-small combinations and distance people like big-big combinations. but nobody had a good reason why.

bigger rings will have ever so slightly less drag (the chain doesn't have to wrap around through as much of an angle) and they will also last a bit longer since the wear is distributed over more teeth. but these effects are both very slight.
bigger rings are heavier, more expensive, and also more likely to get caught/bent in a wreck.

Well, i have a 55cm bicycle and my ratio is 52/19.
From my understanding a bigger chainring means less stress on the chain, specifically the links, they dont have to change as much in angle whilst rotating. But this assumes you have a fairly larger cog in the back to compensate gear inches as well.
Now the only drawbacks would probably be it being larger, perhaps enough to either hit chainstay or cut off your nutsack. If it doesn't do either, then I'd say your fine.
Back when I was building my bike, I was asking my local LBS which I should pick between 40 and 52 toothed chain rings. They kept suggesting 40, and when I asked why I should go with 40... They just said it looks cooler... I believe they just wanted my chain to wear out and lower my skid patches at the same time so I could go back for their chains and tires...
In the end, I say nothing wrong with big chainrings as long as they don't hit anything. 52 looks fine on mine, besides it was originally a freewheel road bicycle and already had a 52t chainring on the cranks.
BTW, that is the first time I've seen such a low gear combo, that is crazy. You could probably fly with it if you pedalled fast enough.
