Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? ACHEM! hello everybody. i have a stupid question for you all. Should i make a "Cassette hub conversion" OR Should i buy veeeeery cheap "thread on freewheel hub" and put bmx freewheel on it? um... um.. im converting my old bike into singlespeed and i dont want to put any money in it. it's a road frame. so can i get my chain to line up nicely if i put bmx freewheel on that cheap "thread on freewheel hub", and do i really need to REDISH the wheel like SHeldonbrown says? My friend says i can get my chain to line up nicely by adjusting the bottom bracket... is it enough? My god im spaced out right now! please help.

I doubt you can "adjust the bottom bracket" unless it's eccentric. Really either conversion will do. As for redishing, that's a maybe. It is all about the chanline.Whatever you do. Enjoy it.

question:
what is the whole "forbidden item" or "forbidden object" that people sometimes list in the trades only thread? does that represent cash/money?

I know people hate on 'em, but the DQM/Trackstar Pista Concepts will always be tight to me. Good stuff. I've only seen about 3 in person, outside of Trackstar.

I'm doing a quick and dirty conversion -- pulled all the cogs off the old five-geared freewheel, then put the one I wanted back on, using spacers to line everything up. No redishing needed, and no tinkering with the bottom bracket -- there's plenty of room for spacing the cog correctly, and if the wheel's redished, there's not enough room for that big freewheel. It's not very pretty, but it works and it's cheap.

This is my first conversion, though, on an old bike. YMMV.

for my single speed i just used the cheep bmx freewheel.... and got a smaller bb, the hard part is getting your outside chainring to clear the frame while getting a small enough bb to create a straight chain line
