Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

My first singlespeed since I was a kid! And, more work than I've done myself on a bike before. This has been great fun.

It's an early 70s Bottecchia frame with the original bottom bracket, cottered crank, pedals, headset, stem, fork & front brake. The wheels & tires (& tubes) were the originals on my hybrid. I'm using the beefy tires in hopes we'll get some snow in Chicago soon. It rides so smoothly I can't wait for skinnier tires in spring. I also had the seatpost which, with a piece of diet coke can, fits well. This is my comfiest B-17 seat. The handlebar tape is too yellow but I didn't want to spend more money. I got the time trial bars and brake lever from Nashbar. I wanted a little more height &/or shorter distance than the stem gave so I just flipped the handlebars for now. It's gonna be a city & neighborhood errand runner and I like it a little upright. Oh, the other expense, was the 18t BMX freewheel & bike shop time to respace the axle (thanks Turin Bicycle in Evanston! ... totally helpful mechanics over there). I am using the chain that came on it for now. It's set up with 44-18. I hope to find a fender at least for the rear before the winter slop hits. The frame is entirely shiny chrome under the blue paint.

These pics aren't too good. When I can borrow a better camera I'll see if I can get some better ones.

The frame came from Working Bikes here in Chicago. What a great place! If you haven't been there and ever have a chance it is a great field trip. Just don't carry more cash than you are willing to spend. Something will definately want to come home with you.

Many thanks to this board. If it hadn't been for all of your gorgeous bikes I don't think I ever would have done this. You guys are great!

that's cool, I was wondering if I was ever going to see one of those old style step through frames done up as a fixie/ss. I think this is the first....and it looks good hubs.

built this few weeks ago for my girlfriend.
frame is a raleigh clubman lady found on the street, we put nitto bars and miche cranks, ambrosio hubs laced to ma3s, brooks B-17, and a big ding-dong bell.
still looking for nice mudguards(fenders).
a very comfy bike.

Yo FrankLar. Tell your son that on that stumpjumper a 44x16 combo works without a tensioner. Nice bikes...wish you were my dad

Super nice ride but...
I like sloped frames, but don't stack the stem like that, it looks awfull.
Sloped frame and stacked stem? What's the point?
Maybe get a bike that fits a little better.

My first fixed... it needs a lot of work. I just got a new seat post and a new saddle that are not in the picture. A good buy for 100 bucks. Completely silent.. I love it!

My girl Rosemary. I always wanted a Bridgestone and I found her on Ebay supercheap and in perfect condition, begging for a higher purpose in life. She's the epitome of a steel ride, like buttah, and even sweeter as a fixie. Campy shifter accessories and a customized stem makes her the prettiest girl in town (although the phrase sexy beast has popped up too....).

Super nice pista, whats with the rims, have you painted them, and how did you do it(deep v or what)?

I'm building up some new wheels on black phils for my BJ(see picture and be baffled), and would love some deep white rims like that - imagine what that would look like...
