Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Some content for the MTB SS folks. [o]

This has been my do it all bike the last couple years, and just recently swapped all the geared/suspended junk onto a new custom ti frame.

What to do with the old? Rigid SS of course! Selling the old frame wouldn't net me much, and getting nearly all the new stuff for the SS setup was cheaply procured on eBay. Tensioner for now. I've got a couple half links to play with, but they didn't quite cut it either - some dropout or axle filing would be needed. Not sure just how much, and if I want to go that route with then having to mess around making sure it doesn't mess with my rear brake spacing.

Sold my blast SS (Ionic Johnny Rotten/Karate Monkey fork) after getting used to the slacker riding Peyto and squishy bike. Not liking it's much steeper XC race geometry, bye-bye it went. The intent was to replace it with something with the slackness, short wheelbase, and small frame of the Peyto. Eventually. Fun SS trail ride, and something to work on my hack trials/urban/jump skills with.

Now of course I have some time off from work for the holidays, a nasty cold, and trails covered with slick as snot icy crap. Sweet! Some Continental Spike 2.1" studded tires are on the way...

(here's the new geary, with all the previous parts on the Peyto swapped on)

Goddamn, 'suspension corrected' doesn't even begin to describe that fork!

That bike looks like a lot of fun.

thanks. only managed to get one urban play ride on the new frame in before we got slammed with the icy crap, but it's damn sweets only thing different geometry and sizing wise between it and the old: it's got a 0.5" longer TT 0.5" taller headtube. and ti, with sliders. burly, lite, no paint or corrosion hassles need apply.

now i have a nasty cold too, though at least it's when the trails are in crappy shape anyhow. timing really is everything.

jim-bob; it's a 29"er fork. lotsa' room for 26" fatties, and gets me the head angle the frame is meant to have without resorting to a stupid spendy custom fork.

lyledriver: 27" on both bikes. i'll likely go wider whenever new bars are needed. nope, don't have a problem nailing trees on the tight twisty stuff either.

They are too clean. They look like some fun bikes to ride. Good luck with the cold.

No but I can tell you where to get it. The wifey got it for me last X-mas, I think through Borders or Barnes & Noble. It's actually reproduced on canvas, not just a paper print. We just haven't gotten around to framing it yet.

We also have this. Found for $20 at a going out of business sale at a ladies sports store in Denver a couple years ago. Frame and all. It's about 28" x 18" or so, slightly larger than the Cycles Gladiator one.

We have both of those in the area here, I'll have to get over there and see what they have, thanks.

DAMN good looking build! Very clean .... with the exception of the singulator. If you wear out / break something on that rear wheel, I'd go with an eccentric rear hub, and dump the singulator.

Heck of a machine as is though!!!! Here's a pic of my baby:

I've got an ENO eccentric doing duty on my road bike already. Works very well, but I'd have to run the eccentric brake mount on this frame as well. For the price of a new ENO disc and brake adapter, I'd just as soon pay to have an eccentric BB swapped in and a repaint. My old SS used an eccentric Bushnell BB and had zero problems in several years and a lot of mileage. That said, I've also done the tensioner thing plenty without any issues either. Also had horozontals in use, and the magic gear thing in the past.

It looks cleaner without a tensioner, but otherwise between all the methods, so long as it works I'm not going to quibble too much.

That said, the ENO would make it much easier to run it fixed, without having to screw around with trying to get good chain tension resorting to half links, filing the axle or dropouts.
